Boy George-one of the most underrated blue eyed soul singers?

I know he is repulsive, but his voice is or used to be gorgeous. Anyone else think he doesn't get props (he prolly never will cause his personal life is hideous)

of course
he's one of the greatest british singers of all time, yet never seems to get the proper credit.

i don't give a shit what he does in his personal life, but he sure can sing his ass of!

boy george + crying game + jim carrey in ace ventura = greatest cinematic montage ever!

He's definitely one of the best voices we've had in a generation. George Michael is up there too, slightly above Boy on the list, but only a notch or two. I wish Boy would just get his shit together, and maybe start doing some appearances on folk's records, like a "featuring" spot, just to get back in it a bit. I'd still love to hear both George's duet on something.

I agree, Boy George is a underrated singer. I'd like to hear George on like a soul standards type project, that like Seal and Aaron Neville have done.

I don't think so.

I find him ugly, his songs are average (though there are some masterpieces like Time) and his voice is thin without studio tricks.

I find the comparisms with George Michael extremely annoying.

Correction, his voice was gorgeous. It's pretty much destroyed now. It's raspy and deep, nothing like it was on the older records. I guess it's due to smoking and drugs just like Whitney Houston.
For instance, he won't sing the Crying Game live anymore because he can't hit any of the notes.
Obviously none of you have heard him sing recently. He attempted a comeback not that long ago with a horrible song called Yes We Can. On it, you can tell his voice is shot.

Where did you hear it? Are you sure you are not confusing him with someone else? George definitely wasn't performing anywhere or any song in August of this year because until recently he was under house arrest for false imprisonment. He hasn't sung the Crying Game in years since the CC reunion in the late nineties. Perhaps it was a Boy George impersonator and you thought it was him.

No, it was definitely an impersonator. He couldn't have been in Amsterdam because he's not allowed to travel outside the UK due to his sentence until 2010. There's a well known BG impersonator who's from Amsterdam. I bet it was him.

well i'm glad you all now excately whats his personal situation is, but it was him...and i've been walking around in the amsterdam gayscene for 15 years now and i never saw never a well known bg imperonator...sorry, why can't you just accept what i saw...it was him, you probably get your stories from the papers, i get them from what i saw....i was standing next to the stage damned!

Why can't you accept maybe it was an impersonator and you were fooled? You wouldn't be the first person to be fooled by a celebrity impersonator. George himself has said in interview he's not allowed to travel outside the UK until 2010. I think he would know. Did they actually announce that it was the real Boy George or you just thought it was by how he looked?

Back in the day, although it was never released as a single, many R&B stations were playing "Black Money" like it was a single.

I've loved culture club for as long as I can remember. Time, Church of the Poison Mind and The War Song are my favourites. I loved Karma Chameleon for years, but think it's so overrated

KC gets on my nerves. I think it was covered by some German band and that's why I hate it. It's a children's song!

TIME (CLOCK OF MY HEART) is just amazing.

It was a children's song for me in the 80's when I was a toddler, family still remind me of loving "come and go" as a baby and getting excited....it was my "single ladies" and so gay

I really think anyone who has sold millions of records doesnt deserve the tag underrated because he's achieved something that 99.99 percent of other singers never do. I think it's more amazing that someone who was so 'out' ever managed to cross over to the mainstream as he did.

This is the last thing I've heard from him with Antony and The Johnsons, which I love.

He was a very good singer. I cannot attest to how he sounds today though. I remember being in the 4th or 5th grade when "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" came out. I loved the Kissing To Be Clever album so much! I had the cassette!

love Boy George, always a big fan of Culture Club and alot of his solo stuff. His album "Cheapness & Beauty" in my opinion is a hidden masterpiece. Killer record.

He was a true original and a terrific talent in his prime.

If you take out the ugly part, i agree with most of what you say, ...George was never ugly ... he was when young a very good looking boy/girl!

But us brits, had a crop of very good "blue-eyed" soul singers but george does not get into the top ten....sorry! biggrin

Would you say that George Michael used to look better than Boy George?

I think so! Boy just looks mean and always did. His nose ist ordinary and mean.

I agree. George was very beautiful back in the 80's. He definitely wasn't ugly then. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like him as a person at all. I've always found him to be very mean and bitchy about other artists and arrogant.
I guess it depends on what look you like. He had that feminine androgynous thing whereas George Michael had more of a masculine beauty.
I think he did have a good voice back in the 80's. But I see what you're saying. It's not a classicaly great voice with a large range. It is kind of on the thin side, but he did have soul back then. But I agree technically George Michael has and still has a much better voice.
