Smooth Brother With A Smooth Voice- The Will Downing Thread

Got to give this brother much props. He came on the scene in the late 80's and made a splash on r*B and quiet storm programming. He did a credible job on the remake of Angela Bofill's "I Try" and his cover of Paul Davis "I Go Crazy is great as well. In the 90's he delivered several superb albums...A Dream Fulfilled, Love's The Place To Be and Moods. IMO, these are among the finest r&B quiet storm recordings{some tracks boast a jazzy backdrop} of the entire decade of the 90's. This albums are perfect for that candlelight dinner with your lover. They also serve as good bedroom music as well. If you haven't heard any of his stuff, check him out. His latest recording is Sensual Journey. In additon to be being a nice vocalist, he's a pretty good songwriter.

His version of I Go Crazy kills me every single time..love it and him. He is very underated as a singer.

I'm sorry to say this, but I have never liked Will Downing and his boring vocals. To me,he's a second-rate Luther Vandross clone.

Sorry...

LOL...what's funny is,my sister was a big fan,so when I still lived at home,I had to listen to his music all the time.I never liked him.I remember in 1989 he did a remake of "Wishing On A Star" that was SO lifeless and bland.

CalhounSp, you really should check out albums like Love's The Place To Be. This album is gorgeous. Beautiful melodies, nice arrangements, good production and solid musicianship. One of the best records of 1993. Songs like "Sailing On A Dream",Lover's Paradise and the remake Hey Girl are almost too good to be true.

Yes...he does resemble Luther vocally, but to me, this brother has developed his own style and way of presenting his music.

Ok,if it will make you feel better...I do kinda like that song he did with Rachelle Farrell,"Love Has Never Felt Like This"(1993).I think that's what it was called??

Oh yes!!! that is one of my favorites by him and her{Rachelle is in my opinion the best female vocalist of the last 10 years}. It is on his album Love's The Place To Be and Rachelle Ferrell's self-titled debut record. To see them sing this live is to really behold something amazing.

For some reason, you got me thinking of Vesta, remember her? I still have her debut album from 1986 which features the hit "Once Bitten,Twice Shy".After that album, she went in a more "jazzy/Quiet Storm" direction.Remember her song "Congratulations"(1989) with that awesome video?

Yeah David, remember that "out of print albums that ought to be reissued" thread that I did. I mentioned that Vesta Williams' debut album was stellar. "You Make Me Want To Love Again" from that album IMO is one of the best R&B slow jams of the 80's.

Thank God someone else thinks this. I think he is awful.
He remake of Waiting in Vain is terrible.
He's a third rate Luther.
