Wow, l'm prety impressed by those figures.. I mean, some of y'all have thousands of vinyls?? wow! How great! How long have U been collecting them?

I'm quite fascinated by the vynil format, but I can't buy a lot of them, because of space issues in my appartement, plus the new ones are pretty expensives...

I'm collecting CDs, buying one or two a week... I have about 500 CDs...

Oy...I'm honestly not sure anymore. I had to sell a bunch of them a while back and the rest are in a box in the garage.


I do know at one point I had just about every domestic Prince vinyl thing from PR up to the Batman album. A shit ton of MJ, and bunch of Duran Duran. I also had a lot of early-mid 80's hip hop that I would love to get on CD.

I'm not sure. I think around 2000 LP's and 12" and about 150 45's. It could be more, as I bought lots and lots for very little when vinyl was going out.
I bought a USB recordplayer, but haven't found the time yet to transfer them to the computer.

Hmm .. about 7,000.
I think about 4,000 albums and about 3,000 45s.

Many of the records in my collecting are rarities. Once I had bought the standard releases in Funk, Soul and Jazz that every collector needs to own, I started focusing on the hard to find material. Especially many of my 45s are extremely hard to find and are often priced in the $100s or more. I rarely pay that much for a single record, so it often takes years of diggin' to find a certain release.

I also made the effort to get rid of a lot of vinyl that I didn't really listen to in order to afford those records on my wantlist that are on the more pricey side. If you want to build a solid collection, you need to sacrifice once in a while.

I know DJs and collectors with 20,000 or more records, and their collections are often shit.
And I know DJs with 1,000 or 2,000 records, and they are some of the best collections I've ever seen, often worth the price of a home.

Some of the top DJs in the UK Funk scene work with what's called "hot boxes". They own a pretty small collection (maybe 200 or 300) or rare 45s ... but these releases are in the ultra rare category, often fetching $2,000 or $3,000 a piece. After a few months of playing their records out, they sell them and replace them with other rarities. Basically, every three months or so they have entirely new collections, and they always have fresh material to play.

That system is not for me .. if I like a record, I keep it, even if I don't ever play it at clubs after a while.

I'm down to 250 records, mostly 78's. I gave my collection (which included my grandparents, great uncle, and my late father collections) to my daughter, in total 5,500. give or take. That collection is now on my media server and ipods. Though I did purchase this summmer DeBarge's "All This Love" and last week The Sylvers, "Bizarre" Lp's.

78s! They are coming back, especially in the Blues scene. Some 1920s Blues releases go for $20,000 to $30,000, which is far more than the most expensive Funk record. I hope yours weren't in good shape when you gave them away.

It was actually his recording studio. He stored his vinyl in there and sustained LOTS of damage.

I'm glad you guys are answering. I didn't mean for folks to LIST every album, just a number. I was surprised I hit 300 on mine. I thought I'd be just under that. (Actually, with the laserdisks, I am just below 300, but only by a couple.)

I would say 100 to 150. I probably own the same amount
of 45's including a lot of classic 45's i took from
my mom's 70's collection.

This it what I use - the classic IKEA book shelf. One shelf easily holds 3,000 albums. A couple of those, and you can have a great collection neatly tucked away on your apartment.

Some are in excellent condition, most are in fine/good condition and some are a lil' worst for wear butthey are playable. I have Race Records from Victor Label, some John Hurt, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie.. just to list a lil' of the pre-war blues. But in terms of the 78's my dads jazz records: East Coast Big Band, Kansas City blues/jazz/bigband. Early Duke Ellingtion, King Oliver, Louis Amrstrong. Dinah Washington/Lionel Hampton and everything Billie Holiday recorded to vinyl.

When we divided up the collection of our folks, I took the BIG names records my brothers were more interested in the obscure stuff. When my dad was alive he and NPR (Blues Before Sunrise) Steve Cushing were good friends and he'd borrow records from my dad for his show. Steve, Pre-War Blues collection. OH. MY. GOD. The man is sitting on a diamond/gold/oil mine, just amazing stuff.

(the only problem is the backing. I had to add a large piece of plywood to the back so the vinyl looks even on all shelves). Unless you have it prompt up directly against the wall,then your fine.
