Robbie Williams... please tell why he is so HUGE in Europe This guy, Robbie Williams: I simply don't get why he is so huge over here, "The fat dancer off Take That".... like Oasis once called him.
To me he's extremely irritating, why do (some of) you like him?? Prince 4Ever. ![]()

At the Brit Awards feb. 16th 2010 he's gonna get the award for "Outstanding Contribution To Music".... formerly won by Paul McCartney and The Who.
I simply don't get why Robbie is gonna get such a price, it's unbelievable, imo. Prince 4Ever. ![]()

Not to mention that Robbie was one of the original members of That Take, THE most successful boy band in UK music history.

i don't understand why he's so popular, his songs are played non-stop on the radio ,you can't get away from the guy it shows that you don't need much talent to make it in uk these days.

He makes me feel ill. | |

Most people in the UK can't stand him.
But there are a LOT of old Take That fans...

I guess he has a crossover image. It's not as limited as some bad guy rocker who puts off pop fans, neither like Eros Ramasotti who caters to housewives with corny ballads. There's always a need for THE male artist in pop and in Europe Robbie got that spot. And yeah, his music is also very pop with stuff like "Angels". Whenever he went "different", it was not a huge hit anymore, like "Rudebox".

Those pics look like Prince in the old days almost! I was never into Take that, but Robbie William's career has certainly produced some gem tracks. Angels, Feel, She's the one, Let me Entertain you, Eternity, Rock dj, Advertising space, the duet with Nicole Kidman< Something stupid, Kids with Kylie Minogue, Tripping & Lovelight. Gorgeous lyrics, a beautiful voice and some well done videos. Rock dj was really fun and the Feel and Angels videos in black and white, were not glossy glamour, but had a natural feel to them. He's done a couple of good covers too. Beyond the sea, Not unusual are my favourites. He really does it well. He brings back some old classic tracks & the way he does them just makes them fit into "now" perfectly. I think he has quite a down to earth image, albeit with the normal hidden superstar issues. Added to that his strong stage personality, and although uninhibited and wild he sings about senstive things. Imo he should have stayed with the guy who originally co-wrote his songs. Those were the best. I do like his new track, Bodies though. He used to have a really good site a few years back with fun quizzes and things. He deserves his fame, he has made some classic contributions to modern music. Plus on top of it all, although I don't like his tatooes, he's got a cute look about him. Also adds to the charm. I think he makes good music and is incredibly charming and funny. He's a great entertainer and gives 110%.

His best songs are written and produced by other people. How much of what's sold under his name was really made by him ? I guess not much. Can he play an instrument ? Can he compose ? Does he write his own lyrics ?

He GOT fat, he wasn't the fat guy from Take That. And it's the same reason Kylie Minogue is big over there. He does euro pop. It's just a different style. I've listened to his music, and I just can't get into it, BECAUSE I'm just not acclimated to that style of music. I do love "Rock DJ", and the video is pretty cool too (he's butt naked in it, and NOT fat at all).
Take That was much bigger in the UK than the US, although I do remember a song or two of their's here when they started out. He's cocky, has an ego, but has a good voice, and can fill 50,000 seaters in no time flat.

Does he write his own lyrics ? I don't care about that. So "makes" was probably the wrong word to use. He performs good music. Writing your own material and being able to play instruments is a big bonus. But important is that you have good songs and voice, great stage persona and that you can entertain your audience. Swing when you're winning was brilliant! [Edited 10/24/09 10:46am]

co-sign. also i think too many male artists take themselves way to seriously and are afraid to have a sense of humour about themselves. Robbie is a performer through and through. and "Escapology" is one of the best album by a male artist in recent years. "Rock DJ", "Let Me Entertain You"..CLASSIC!!

I agree, Robbie is way overrated.
His first album was flopping, and it was only that guy chambers song "angels" that got him his big hit and status as a solo star. He does have some great songs in his albums, and europe seems to love him. Personally, I prefer Take That. The original Take That was a great boy band, who happened to have an amazing song writer as its lead vocalist, Gary Barlow. And if you see Take That today, you can how talented Gary Barlow is. Way more talented than Robbie, but Gary's own solo career flopped due to some bad song choices and just a boring image. Robbie has the image and the likeability which has endeared him to his fans in the UK and Europe. But Take That have overtaken Robbie now and have sold even more than they did when Robbie was in the band!

Exactly. He's always been popular over here, although there was a short period after his only concert here in 1999 where he wasn't liked much, especially by the press. That's probably because he was a bit rude to a TV reporter trying to get an interview with him and he cut his concert short after some idiot threw a plastic bottle at him. Generally any celebrity who comes here and says positive things about the country and his/her visit is dubbed an "Icelandophile" by the media. Robbie Williams is one of a handful of people who's considered the antithesis to an Icelandophile. I think his distinctly British tongue-in-cheek persona is part of the reason why he doesn't translate well over to American audiences. Most Icelanders grew up on a steady diet of British comedy so we can relate to Robbie in a way... I liked his two appearances on Little Britain

Yeah hes basically a show-man, does shocking things and that is why he continues to catch the public. BUT please do not say that UK has a "worse" mainstream scene than the USA. Just the fact that you guys in the UK still have top 10 hits from 80's bands like a-ha and Depeche Mode, you fucking beat us by a mile! We cant even get a label/or station to play them here. Plus you guys have Girls Aloud and the Saturdays so again a clear mile ahead of us. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Its mostly about loyality, sure they have the newjacks that we do, and this and that. The fact that you can still leap into the Top 10 and be 40+ years old, that is UNHEARD of here unless its the album chart, our album chart almost doesnt reflect anything that gets played. I mean Kiss at Number 2 (do they get played anywhere for that record?) Barbara comes in at Number 1 (any airplay?) so its always amazed me that things used to be similar in that respect, but now the two dont go hand in hand "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
