As a New yorker this is the cheesiest song ever. Since day one it was cheesy and its gotten worse, just painting by numbers i need a hit song. Alicia brought the braids out again I like the video capturing the NY landmarks.... reality is some great memories are here in NYC however the state died when old 42nd street was revamped into Disney Land 9-11 speaks for itself.
Harlem is mad about gentrification, well while many were letting it waste away a plan was in place to re-zone business.Right now as it stands the middle ground is gone native New Yorkers will soon be unable to afford to live here. Don't ge me started on how nightlife was killed since late 90's Aside from that the big Apple still stands

out of curiousity, why do you think it's cheesy??? Its just all stereotypical things thrown into a lyric. Im not a fan of these type of songs, people already are putting this shit on their shirts and ringtones and bullshit like that. I always say, stay far away from gimmicky songs like this. Some people say this song is motivational, but thats crap. Its cheesy in the way Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is and always was, its written to be cheesy, its a total cash in, not saying its wrong but thats what it is. So i dont wanna hear Jay saying he was inspired by NYC, because he's talking out of his ass on that. He needed a song that everyone can indentify with, just like a "Born in the USA" or a Jovi song like "Its my Life" or "Have a nice day" i mean thats called appealing to everyone, thats why it was done, and thats why its cheesy, just like Jovi or Springsteen are so is this, cant draw the line for some and not for all. Don't ge me started on how nightlife was killed since late 90's Aside from that the big Apple still stands People do realize that over 70% of the people in New York itself, were not born in NYC, im talking the city itself not the boroughs. But give it time and as the rents in Brooklyn are now skyrocketing u will soon see the same in the boroughs. So this song should point out how NYC is standing, but only if you are RICH is it for you. The lyrics are written just like the others, something that many can indentify with. That time period of Ronald Reagan and his era where all our problems today began, thats something back then that many indentified with. Just like John Mellencamp singing "Smalltown" its the same premise. Your taking "moments" that everyone can indetify with in large and putting them in a backdrop of song. To a degree, but theres the line where it becomes cheesy. A song like Queens "We will rock you" and "We are the champions" also fall into this. Im saying that Jayz did this to get into that anthem cheesy category. What this song and songs like that, they lose their appeal because they now are staples at games, events, rallies, and they lose the personal meaning they may have had or even been written for. Again being cheesy isnt bad, but he clearly had the motive of doing something like those other songs first and foremost, the song will lose its appeal because of that as the others did. WOW do you even know what that classic song is about? not everyone can identify with Born in the USA, but you wouldn't know that, cause similar to Ronald Reagen you didn't give it a proper listen. 2012: The Queen Returns

Bleh. They could've really done something original for this video but whatever.
I can see why someone might think anthem songs like this one are cheesy, but the refrain for this song soars and is memorable. The music and Alicia's vocals capture the feel of this song more than any of Jay's lyrics IMO. "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."

Will someone please tell Jay-Z to stop. Didn't he retire like 5 albums ago? Run your club, watch your team play ball, bang Beyonce! But please stop with these comebacks. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I absolutely agree the boroughs are worse (rent wise) since everyone fled Manhattan post 2001 so yes it will be a state for the rich only the new Tokyo

If you read the lyrics you know Its not a happy-happy wrap yourself in an american flag song. Born in the USA just has a kick-ass chorus and hook that people gravitate to. I like this Jay-Z song too and the Alicia chorus is pretty kick ass too. [Edited 11/2/09 5:11am]
