Bootsy Stuff First, last night Bootsy Collins appeared on an episode of Dinner: Impossible (Food Network).
The episode is titled Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Rock the Chef. Chef Robert Irvine heads to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a music inspired mission. Robert has just nine hours to cook a legendary meal for 250 Rock Hall VIPs. But to make his meal sing, Robert must base his menu based on six influential genres or events: the British Invasion, the Blues, Woodstock, Hip-Hop/Rap, Seattle Grunge and Rock and Roll. http://www.foodnetwork.co...index.html The next airing is Nov. 7 at 4pm. or you can probably catch it online. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Second, ran into this radio interview he did in 1999: http://chriscomerradio.co...-15-99.htm Comments on James Brown, George Clinton, Bill Laswell, Buckethead & Prince between a couple of goofy phone calls. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I like this part:
Chris: Who would you like to play with? Bootsy: Wow, who would I like to play with? Chris: Prince? Bootsy: Aaaaah...(2 second silence)...It's not, it's not really a challenge.

I love Bootsy, but that was unecessary - I wonder if his comment it based on fact or rivalry/jealousy/grudge?
A bit of both maybe - Bootsy has done some crap music, but he always tries to stretch himself and try new areas - he's got the chops, but Bootsy hasn't got the commercial/songwriting skills of Prince.

I don't think Bootsy ever sought to become a truly commercial mainstream artist. And in my opinion, both of them have done some crap music. Like most artists.

I think that's the nail's head being hit. Prince would be emulating something Bootsy was actually involved in the creation of. In other words, been there done that, as it would relate to James Brown based music. IMO, there's no reason to try and read any deeper into the statement. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. It's actually kinda true! I mean from James Brown to Parliament-Funkadelic to Bootsy's Rubberband to producing the debut Zapp lp, where is the challenge in playing with Prince?
I've heard it was Bootsy being referred to as the 'long tall snaggly gold-tooth, bean pole looking', in "Tricky" by The Time(Morris & Prince)so who knows? Release Yourself

But Bootsy ain't pimp as Prince. Everybody wants to be like Prince, not Bootsy!!!
Bootsy actually could enjoy a jam with our man possibly learn some new tricks. Bump what I said in that other post! George loves P and James had great respect for him. In 1982 Prince's brand of Funk was on the rise and a threat to the ol' skool funkers with big horn sections and glittery costumes. Release Yourself

I don't know anyone who wants to be like Prince, with the exception of some peeps on this forum. Bootsy actually could enjoy a jam with our man possibly learn some new tricks. He may enjoy a jam, but as far as learning new tricks - hardly. Bump what I said in that other post! George loves P and James had great respect for him. In 1982 Prince's brand of Funk was on the rise and a threat to the ol' skool funkers with big horn sections and glittery costumes. In 1982, Prince wore glittery costumes himself, and he added a horn section not too long after that because he knows that horns are the real deal when it comes to Funk.

This puzzles me, because I remember an interview Bootsy did back in 1981, and they asked Bootsy who he liked in the music industry at that time, and Bootsy went on and on about how impressed he was by Prince. He elaborated on how he just loved everything about Prince, his whole vibe. And since that time, I've always hoped for a Bootsy/Prince collaboration. So I would have to think what Bootsy meant by this latest statement is that Prince is already funky, so there would be no challenge. Whereas playing with Taylor Swift or The Jonas Brothers (...for example) would definitely be a challenge. Plus Bootsy DOES record an awful lot of very challenging material with Bill Laswell.
But to be honest, Bootsy has disappointed me in a few different areas in recent years (mostly on a personal level), so I'm just left scratching my head with what he could have meant in this latest statement in regards to Prince. And the fact remains... he HASN'T produced anything with Prince yet, to my knowledge. Perhaps Prince has pissed him off in some way over the years, or perhaps Warner Brothers showed Prince favor over Bootsy when they were on the same label (because Prince DID hit the scene at about the same time Bootsy was at his popular peak).

Wait a minute... what about that joint called Groove Eternal featuring "One" from Bootsy's 2004 release, Play With Bootsy, featuring a whole lotta different musicians?
