I love old school hip hop / rap music. I don't really care for the music out now for the fact that it's been "dumbed down". Only thing that usually gets the audience moving is the actual beat to the song. I'll take 90's hip hop/rap over this era

Moving in what kind of a way? To do a waltz or some ballroom dancing? Hell, the beat is the worst part of the songs today. It's too slow and it sounds like it was made with Fisher Price toys. lol

Nah, a lot of these beats are hot on these new rap songs. Moving as in having the crowd dancing, lol. Some songs I only listen to FOR the beat.

I'm watching Run DMC on "Soul Train" right now doing "Rock Box" and their drum machine doesn't sound like this shit that's been out for last 15 years. It's thumping hard with just enough punch. Damn near sounds like real drums.

Vocoder's been out longer than that. I don't know about autotune but the vocoder has been out since the late '60s at least.

The problem that I have with it is the following.

1. Most of it has been "Dumb Down", to the point where it is almost insulting to the listener.

2. There is no originality in neither the rhymes or the music that they are using.

3. The death of Tupac and Biggie.

4. The fact that multimedia corporations (especially Clear Channel Communications) put all of their focus on the gangsta style of rap and totally forsake all the other hip-hop/rap sub-genres (political rap, hip-house, alternative rap, etc.) in the process.

Agree with 1,2,4...3 & 5?..disagree
5. On a mainstream level, hip-hop (like most of USA pop culture in the 21st century) has too much elements taken from Freemasonry, witchcraft, & the occult

They used to play plenty of jams. I used to think that because this is Mississippi that they weren't playing a lot of the stuff or slow to get stuff like the rest of the nation. That is until the cable channels like BET and the internet and I saw it was a nationwide tragedy, not just a local one unless you went waaay underground. But looking back, we've pretty much gotten jams the same time if not quicker than the rest of the nation. Back in the 80s, our local "Soul Train" type dance show called "Black Gold" used to play jams months before they would turn up on "Soul Train". And radio back then was pretty much up on things. I've know I've stumped a few orgers with some jams and even had to hip a lot of them to Ebonee Webb.

No, this is a nationwide thing, not a local one. But I would love to get the hell out of Mississippi though but it's like Gilligan's Island, once you're born here, you're stuck because they don't pay anything and it takes money and connections to get out. lol

House turned into acid, trance, or whatever the hell they call it these days. It actually became too fast to dance to unless you were strung out on some speed or something. lol I like to shake ass, not hop around like a stoned rabbit. House had a funky disco type vibe to it. When it turned to trance, all that was taken out.

Sounds like you live in New York or something. I would love to move there but I can't even afford to move across town let alone to another state where I know no one and don't know which areas are safe and which ones aren't. And from what I've heard, even a cardboard box in New York is out of my price range. lol

What's G-Funk. Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dog, etc.? Yep, hated it. Dr. Dre was better when he was in World Class Wrecking Crew and they were making jams like "The Fly" and "Bionic".

Philadelphia, but it's all the same region,so I guess it doesn't matter.I feel for you, because you actually yearn for something new in your life. That frustration I acknowledge and respect.people on here always ask for advice and get it.If you made a thread that you needed advice to move out of MS. I know plenty. I listened to mainstream R&B radio from 1979 to 1997. I had been sick of it around 1991 but tolerated it up until around 1997 when oldies stations started popping up. That's when I took the current stations off my dial and haven't looked back since. Unfortunately, the oldies stations were owned by Clear Channel but hey, what can you do? lol

I'm telling ya, we got everything y'all got up there and what the radio didn't get, the clubs got, especially the gay clubs as far as house music goes. Jackson has always been a city with a huge black population. In the 1980s, it was probably around 40 to 50 percent and now it's 80 or 85 percent. So as far as R&B goes, we were never lacking. Hell, we even had a local funk scene in the early 80s with several local bands and damn near all the blues artists lived and recorded down here on Malaco records, not that I'm much into blues though.
