Why Should You Ever Listen to Music on the Radio?

I was just having this conversation with someone and did a write up on it for my blog, so I was wondering what people had to say. I mean to summarize, I'm not talking about small stations and college radio, I mean the big corporate owned stations. Is the music they are playing really in our best interest? Not only that, but why should you let someone else tell you what you should listen to, especially when those are probably not the best songs out there. Big labels paying for spins, etc. I made a lot of other points, so if you want you can read the article below, but I'm curious to people's reactions. I know I might get some hate for this, but this is a serious question.

Well, I don't listen to the radio. Unless I want a news or traffic update while driving. Exactly as you said, I want to choose what I want to hear and the radio sure doesn't give me what I want to hear. I also loathe the adverts. I have enough music to keep my ears happy. When I'm at a point of really in need for new music, I might listen to some jazz stations. Any really decent popular track worth having will be played somewhere when I'm out and about so that I know about it. No. I don't need the radio.

I don't listen to stations that play current music at all and haven't since 1997. The only time I listen to radio at all is when I'm in the car and then I only listen to oldies stations. Unfortunately, they are owned by huge corporations but I have no other choice other than playing a CD in the car but I prefer radio because I don't want to know what song is going to be played next. Knowing the song that is going to be played next is like watching a rerun of a TV show that you've seen before.

Interesting take, that's why I love to put my top rated songs on Ipod on shuffle. But, I also enjoy listening to albums straight through, even though I might have done that many times before and know the order of the songs.

At home, I've put all my songs into my computer and play them on shuffle through the Windows Media Player. When I entered each song, I entered the year and genre of each song. If I'm in a funk mood, I simply go to funk and hit shuffle and thousands of songs play at random. I can do the same with a particular year also. And if I'm not listening to shuffle on the computer, then I'm usually playing records or CDs on my two turntables and two CD players which I have plugged into a mixer. One song by Prince, maybe followed by another song by The Barkays, etc. Just whatever I'm feeling at that particular moment. I do listen to entire albums all the way through sometimes, but rarely.

I never have liked Walkman radios or anything that confines you to some headphones. I like to feel the beat vibrating the floor and shaking the walls. lol I think I read somewhere that you could plug an ipod into a car radio but I have an old car. I've never seen any ipod adapters in a 1995 Cadillac. lol

Nice, I'm the same way when it comes to organization. I have everything sorted by year and genre, and every sub genre in some categories. I definitely have moods when I only want to hear a certain type of music.

Man, you sound like that noisy neighbor who always has the music too loud in the apartment! haha just kidding.

Actually, my car is from 1999, what I did was get a head unit that features the ipod connection and it works perfectly. The sound is great, just like cd quality.

That's what FM Transmitters are for.

Also, I recently bought a bluetooth for my car that allows me to play the music on my cell phone through my fm radio. I LOVE IT!! I drive around town listening to internet radio through my cell phone. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I hadn't thought about using the subgenre feature but it would come in handy for someone like Prince. Even though songs like "Let's Go Crazy" are straight up rock songs, I entered them as funk because I don't want them popping up when I'm in a Def Leppard, Van Halen type mood. I want them playing alongside of Rick James or The Barkays just like they used to on R&B radio. I guess subgenre would take care of that, I'll have to try it and see.

I only entered the years for funk, disco, and slow jams. I didn't enter years for pop/rock because I don't want them popping up if I'm listening to funk and slow jams from 1982. I try to recreate the feeling of listening to R&B stations back during that time as much as possible. I would like to listen to pop/rock by year though. I've tried entering 1982A or 1982B but the computer won't accept it. I'm thinking about maybe changing the century on the pop/rock years and entering them as maybe 1882 and see if I can outsmart the computer. lol

Thanks for the heads up, because radio plays the same old hip hop bullshit OVER and OVER, most of the time I just cut the radio off and play my own mixed cds.

I have never listened to radios. Never liked what they were playing, except for when I was in my teens and this was the only way to hear my music cause I didn´t have the tapes or CDs.

I feel like what might be the case is, most of us on this forum and others are such passionate fans of music, we strive for more than what the radio gives us and we avoid it.

Most definately and moreso than most people on other fansites. Prince was/is such a great musician that he naturally was going to attract fans with such a passion for music. There are many people on this site who are musicians and DJs themselves.

You´re probably right. Most people around me listen just to the commercial stuff that the media feed them with. They don´t care to learn about or listen to more. Even though, I am not a musician, nor a DJ, but I´ve always been the one to know the most about music in my family except for my dad who is a professional musician, so naturally he knows a lot.

This site for the last several years has served as one of my radio stations.

Digging deeper and exploring territory either vastly under appreciated or in some cases even unknown.

The wiser someone is, the more consistency in passion, the more I listen. But that hardly exists anymore on commercial radio.

I only listen to the radio in my car and while at work. And if I hear a Lady Gaga song one more time... lol Time to change the station.

These days, I don't even care about finding new songs or groups because I already know I'm not going to like them even before I hear them. I just wish they would stop having television commercials and coverage for them so I could have no exposure to them whatsoever. lol

lol Since I hardly listen to radio, I know of her from watching tv like when she came on The View last year and then her appearance on American Idol last season.

Yeah, exactly. Yet the same people have never heard of Prince or Stevie Wonder, for example. lol Unbelievable.
