As a songwriter, he's still Stevie Wonder's inferior I'm listening to "All is Fair in Love." And, I'm floored once again by Stevie's command of melody, dynamics, musicianship and -- most important -- lyrics.
Prince is bad. The dude wrote "Pink Cashmere," "Empty Room" and hundreds of other gems. But, at the risk of sounding dismissive of Prince as a writer, I think even he would have to acknowledge that the top of his game (arguably SOTT) is leagues below Stevie's SITKOL. And, when it comes to social contributions as a songwriter, Stevie's a veritable giant. Maybe it's reflective of their respective perspectives, but I dig Stevie's "A Time to Love" as a social commentary. What's Prince's most recent one? "Resolution?" "Colonized Mind?" Really? Mmm'kay...

Yeah, but the same genius who wrote the masterpiece You and I also wrote the unforgivable I Just Called To Say I Love You.
They've both produced their share of masterpieces. They each bring their own sensibilities and goals to what they do. They each have skills that outshine the other. I'm just glad that they're my two favorite musical artists of all time and that I've lived to enjoy their supreme brilliance, the occasional Jughead aside.

It's like something he might have written for someone to sing on Lawrence Welk (he said, dating himself ). That song belonged in that long-distance phone commercial where it ended up. And don't get me started about that dun-dun-dun at the end. D&P is superior serving of syrup by virtue of its arrangement and vocal harmonies. Sweet, but not too much so.

I don't find anything particularly wrong with I Just Called To Say I Love You. Or Diamonds and Pearls or the like. It's just a shame when they become some of the biggest hits they have. Stevie Wonder for me is just the ultimate. I'm sure others see the same thing with Prince. But for me... Stevie just runs the spectrum of styles I love and much like Prince, I'm absolutely floored when I see him live and you can just tell that his albums don't need tons of doctoring because he's the real deal. I say it all the time, but once you cross a certain threshold of greatness (a threshold which both Prince and Stevie have crossed), the rest is just up to individual taste.

Prince's command of different genres gives him the edge for me over Stevie. |

In the 70's Stevie raised the bar for American songwriters. He set a new standard that 30 years later artists young and old are still inspired by. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I've said this before in the past: Musically, Prince sometimes pulls a lot of tricks and shortcuts to achieve what he does whereas Stevie doesn't.
As for genres, that has no bearing on musical abilities. A great pianist, for example, is a great pianist no matter what style they play. Just because they choose not to play a certain genre doesn't necessarily mean they are incapable of it. Example: Stevie Ray Vaughn had the finger dexterity to play classical but he played the blues because he loved the blues. Stevie Wonder chooses R&B as his genre because he obviously has more of a cultural affinity than Prince ever did. Prince has spent his career trying to be different from black folk while Stevie has always embraced his culture. Stevie's cultural honesty, like his musical brilliance is rooted in truth...not taking shortcuts. Prince's musical trickery (like using 2-note chords to construct songs and then stacking them with different sounds or echoing his guitar solos with synths to make them sound fuller and "different" are a couple of examples off the top of the dome) makes his material very interesting but when you analyze what was played, it still comes up as what it is. I'm not taking anything from either of them; just stating differences.

"Songs" and "Sign" are landmark albums both remisicient of each other yet so totally different as Stevie and Prince are themselves.
