Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers Anyone heard her yet? I think it's the real deal. An Indian-American Patti Smith with a gotdamn harmonium, who somehow doesn't end up sounding pretentious!
When people get all "Lady GaGa is an exciting new artist," stuff like this puts it back into proper perspective. [Edited 10/4/09 12:46pm]

I saw them when they opened for Boss Hog here last month. They were cool. But what the hell is that thing Shilpa is playing?

Yay! Response! Sorry I missed it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonium It's apparently a harmonium, although it just seems like a big-old accordion to me. I really, really am digging her album, one of the few new ones that I keep going back to. She's totally psycho, and doesn't really seem like the most pleasant person, but that voice and those melodies are just classic to me.

Ah, that's what you said in the first post. I should pay attention more when I read these threads. Yeah, it's like an accordion laid flat. I had never seen one before.

Harmonium is to accordian what steel guitar is to electric guitar.

Are you making that comparison because of the posted clip?

Are you making that comparison because of the posted clip? Yep. Gotta be honest. I haven't checked her out in depth YET. I will give her a shot, though. I'm not hearing anything new in her voice.

I'm not hearing anything new in her voice. She sounds nothing like Amy in my opinion. It's gritty, and definitely not as technically accomplished, but I also feel like it's more genuine and less imitative of other singers (even though I compared her to Patti Smith in the original post ) What you don't get from this clip is that a lot of the album rocks. Like, hard. [Edited 11/5/09 13:26pm]

I won't dismiss her on the basis of one song. I'll give her a listen, even though I'm not a big fan of accordions/harmoniums and the like. At least she's not playing bagpipes or any double reed instrument. She would be severely dismissed then.

It's much less notable in a lot of the album tracks. http://www.myspace.com/shilparay
