Underrated Soul Man Leroy Hutson

Somehow I went my entire childhood having never heard of Hutson, but a chance encounter with the greatest hits package Lucky Fellow, The Best of Leroy Hutson (Charly Records) was the turning point. Though I bought the a disc simply because it was associated with Mayfield's funk house Curtom Records, whose roster included Baby Huey & the Babysitters and Linda Clifford, it was Hutson's cool sound that blew me away. Not many cats can sound laid-back and aggressive at the same time, but Hutson's voice and music was icy hot.

Leroy Hutson is one of my favorite artists, and there are a whole bunch other people here who dig him as well.
I have his stuff on CD and most of it on LP as well. I'm still missing a couple of albums on LP, but I'm working on it smile

It's nice to hear that you discovered, and enjoyed, Mr. Hutson's music.
Spread the message! smile

Leroy Hutson is definitely underrated. Only heard about him a year or so ago after reading a book about Curtis Mayfield and saw that Leroy was signed to the Curtom label and replaced Curtis as lead singer for the Impressions at one time too. Maxwell's music and singing style reminds me alot of Leroy Hutson too.

I found out about Leroy Hutson via youtube. I ran across a video that had songs that sampled and the songs that they sampled. The video had Erykah Badu's No Love, which is one of my fav EB songs, and of course Lucky Fellow was played as the song that was sampled.

You saw that coming. lol

No doubt, Lee Hutson isn't just one of the most underrated Soul singers of the 1970s, but he was an amazingly talented producer. He was staff producer at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom records and he wrote, arranged and produced gems like these:

And this one ...

Leroy Hutson isn't only my favorite Soul artist of the 1970s, but I'm also proud to call him my friend. Last year, he appeared on my radio show for a two-hour-special about his music - his first radio appearance in many years. It was some deep talk, so check it out here:

And of course I'm especially proud of these two pieces in my collection:

Due to heavy usage. biggrin
The record plays fine though. It was the first Leroy Hutson album that I found, back in the early 1990s.

"I Can't Stay Away" and "I Do (Wanna Make Love To You)" were two fabulous soul ballads from the Seventies.
This Chicago soul man never got his just fruits indeed.

"All Because of You" is my favorite Leroy track. IIRC, it's played on the Midnight Soulstice podcast.
