Check out this radio playlist from 1981....

While browsing the internet, I found an old playlist for two local Jackson, Mississippi radio stations from 1981. These used to be available in the record stores for free at the checkout counter. WJMI is still in existance today but it is a shit hop disgrace to the ass kickin' station it used to be. Check out these song titles back when the station was slammin'. Great stuff. Prince, Rick James, The Barkays, Raydio, etc. And if you are wondering who Sho Nuff is on both playlists, that was a local group. Radio actually promoted local artists back then and was proud of them.

The Kiss FM playlist was about a year before I began listening to that station and in 83 "Cold Blooded" was played to death.

This was October of 1982 and a lot of the tracks from "Throwin' Down" got a lot of their airplay during the summer. Actually, radio started playing "Standing On The Top" and "Dance Wit Me" during the spring during my ninth grade year right before we got out for summer vacation. When summer hit, then they started playing "Hard To Get", "Money Talks", "Teardrops", and "Happy" a lot. When I started tenth grade in September, they were still playing the album but not as much as before. Around the time of this playlist, then a 12 Inch of "69 Times" popped up and they started playing it.

Radio didn't wear songs out like they do now. If an album came out in the summer, by Christmas it was out of style and the artist was working on a new album for the next spring or summer. In the meantime, other artists were releasing albums in the fall and winter which took up the slack. Songs were never drug out for two years until "Thriller" and it was a rare incident.

Thanks. Now I can read the songs without squinting my eyes. lol

I see Lady V down at the bottom of the playlist when she worked for WOKJ. She's still in radio today working at WKXI. 6'3" Lady V "The Tall Lady Of Soul" is what they used to call her.

What did extras mean? Did that mean they would only play the song if they got around to it?
And how come on that one list, "Nasty Girl" was in heavy rotation, while "1999" was an add? Wasn't 1999 out before "Nasty Girl"?

I believe Nasty Girl came out that summer, but I know the 1999 album didn't come out til later that year.

Is it this particular band (I'm assuming there might've been more than one band called Sho Nuff) that did the slow jam "Don't Be Lonely"?

That's true.Back in those days, artists released a new album every year. So,their albums didn't "drag on" for months and months. In many cases, they would release only two singles (maybe three),then quickly go back into the studio to start recording the new album.'Thriller' was a rare exception.

yes, and that was my point

today's 'crap' may seem like crap but it is not crap to those who made it popular - so there is no difference between an old list of songs like this and today's current list

When I look at what's listed on Billboard R&B/Soul current.... I'm lucky if I've purchased one album in top 20. LUCKY. So, in my opinion Andy ani't on some nostalgia trip, on a whole the music being made/produced is shitty, across the board. (IMO)

The first time I heard "Nasty Girl" was around August. It was a few weeks before we went back to school in September. I remember when radio played the single "1999" for the very first time. It was either late September or early October because we hadn't been back in school for very long. Then about a month later, I started hearing "1999" with the "don't worry, I won't hurt you" intro and the "paaaaarty" continuation on a Memphis station, WDIA (I could pick it up full of static late at night) around two weeks prior to the release of the "1999" album.

No. Unfortunately, there are loads of people down here that love it. If they hated it, there would be no problem because they wouldn't be buying it and we could all start back to throwing down again. I invented the term shit hop myself and it caught on and spread.

The band on that playlist that did "What Am I Gonna Do" is the same band that did "Don't Be Lonely". "What Am I Gonna Do" is from their 1980 album "Tonite" and "Don't Be Lonely" is from their 1982 album "Stand Up For Love".

It amazes me how people overseas in Finland have heard of our local bands and people right here in the US in other states haven't. Back when those albums were released, a local concert promoter and host of our local "Soul Train" type show called "Black Gold" was always saying that Sho Nuff, Freedom, and Wynd Chymes were overseas touring Tokyo and we didn't believe him. We thought he was making it up. That is, until the internet era and I started seeing Japanese import CDs and started seeing the groups mentioned in forums by people from overseas.

Malaco Records must have sold these songs to another company or something because they don't even have them at their studio anymore. Thankfully I have my vinyl because if I didn't, I would have to order something from around the world that was recorded five minutes away from my house. lol

Hell yeah. They played the hell out of it in my area but on WJMI only. The other two R&B stations didn't play it.

The hell you say. Where is the shit hop on those playlists? I don't see even one shit hop song on those playlists. Now, where are the fast songs on today's playlists? Look how many fast songs are on those old playlists. Hell, this is the 2000s and fast R&B doesn't exist anymore? What the hell is this, the 1800s or something? Do you know how long it took for fast rhythmic music to take over in this country and get rid of all that slow dull classical type music? Hell, hundreds of years and now these little youngsters go back to making nothing but slow dull stuff. Hell naw. Looks like people went backwards instead of forwards.

Damn right. Soul doesn't exist anymore. R&B still exists but now it means something completely different....Rhythmless Bullshit.
