What happened to Outkast?

It's been three years since their last major release. Did they split? Or have they just fallen off a cliff? cool

They did claim back in 2006 that the Idlewild project was going to be the last that they were going to work on together. I guess the Speakerboxxx/The Love Below hype got a little too heavy-handed on them.

I don't believe that they officially called it quits, there has to be something in the works, there just has to be. I know Andre 3000 wanted to try his hand at acting, but its been long enough already, we need to hear from the residents of Stankonia again.

I do remember that Andre had that cartoon that went unnoticed and the soundtrack didn't do so well either. Big Boi did a solo project with his crew, but that went unnoticed too. Andre has been in some good flicks like John Singleton's Four Brothers and he made a guest appearance on John Legend's single, Green Light.

I know that Big Boi was featured on one of Mariah's remixes. I'm not sure about Andre but I met him in March and he seemed kind of depressed. So maybe they're on a hiatus.

My kids actually liked that cartoon..they call Dre the "hey Ya guy"..lol...Their next album will be in the same concept as Speakerboxx/The Love Below..giving each their own shine.I've heard them rhyming together on mixtapes and they still sound good. But I did hear that they haven't split up, just doing their own thang and that an album is in the works..

Why do people assume a breakup or something negative just because someone hasn't released an album in 3 years? Dig a bit online, and dig up.

Didn't it take Metallica 5 or 6 years before release the Black Album?

I figured that they must have something cooking; and on a side note, I would rather more artist use the 'Sade Approach' and take x number of years between projects if it means they'll release a quality album, and not a bunch of crap with one hit single.

3 years from ...And Justice For All to the Black Album, and another five until Load. Six between ReLoad and St. Anger, and five between St. Anger and Death Magnetic.

I was in LA in 2006 making a documentary for the BBC about 'Pac, staying in a hotel in Hollywood. In the week I was there, it was the premiere of Outkast's Idlewild movie, so there were a lot of artists and DJ's around who were in town for that.

When I say that not one person could find anything good to say about that movie, that's an understatement. LOL.

I think they put a lot into that project and when it flopped it through them off course, especially after the success they'd had just prior with Speakerboxx/The Love Below. I never saw the movie, but I heard 4-5 songs from it and didn't like any of them.

I think that entire project (the movie and the soundtrack) was ill-conceived.It was like when Prince followed up 'Purple Rain' with 'Under The Cherry Moon'....the masses couldn't relate.A big flop can sometimes throw an artist off track, but it could also inspire them to make a truly outstanding album,to prove that they still "have it".

That's true. Let's hope that's the case with OutKast and they have spending their time working on a quality album.

there are actually some great songs on there and in my opinion they take hip-hop to another level sometimes that not even hip-hop fans can appreciate

wikipedia is wrong a lot. In November 2008, It was reported Outkast would drop three albums in 2009. It didn't happen. There may be reports of a new CD in early 2010 but who knows.

I generally don't like southern rappers, but I loved Outkast b/c they were original. Andre for some reasons always reminds me of Prince - just the vibe.
