The first three singles from that project (Feedback, Rock With U, Luv) were pure pop. The Velvet Rope is probably the record with the most consistent Urban appeal that she's released. I don't know what the hell she was thinking releasing Urban music Especially when she didn't do it before.
Janet had always had major success at Urban, although when she was releasing her biggest hits it was a much different format (more pop-leaning) than it is today. She is one of the biggest crossover artists of all time, as her appeal spanned Top 40, Rhythmic and Urban formats alike. That's hard to do. The production on "Call on Me" is Hip-hop while the vocal arrangements is R&B. The only reason it maybe considered Pop is for the catchy melodic chorus. And I think Discipline was really created to appeal to the Urban audience(basically young black teens (sorry, to put it that way)) but you're right the singles were more pop then R&B (most likely so it would crossover to pop). I hope she doesn't do that with her next album. She needs to leave the shit-hop to Mariah and go back to what made her popular in the first place- Pop.

I think WGCI in Chicago was the first to break it. They also broke "Until The End of Time" from JT and made the record company consider releasing it as a single. Feedback went to #1 at Hot Dance Music/Club Play, too. It was definitely made for Top 40 radio, but wound up doing slightly better at Urban, at least in terms of chart placement (even though it's not something Urban would typically play) simply because there is less anti-Janet vitriol at the Urban format versus at Top 40. If Janet were to make a strong Urban-oriented track and send it for adds at Urban and Urban AC only, and *then* try to cross over to Top 40 if/when it became a success at those core formats, I think her chances for having a hit would be much greater. Janet's singles in general this decade (All For You, Someone To Call My Lover, Just A Little While, etc.) are squarely aimed for Top 40 success and were indeed more successful at that format versus Urban. Call on Me is straight up R&B spiced with Hip-hop. It was premiered on there because Virgin expected it to take off based on Janet's previous Hot 100 accomplishments but 20 Y.O. as a whole was aimed towards the Urban market. Janet said herself that she was only getting love from the Urban side after the SB. Damita Jo is a blend of Pop and R&B. The whole album was done before the Superbowl and then rushed to shelves soon after. I know all her singles BEFORE the Superbowl were aimed for Top 40 or higher success because she always got success on there. But 20 Y.O. and Discipline are as Urban as it gets I don't know what the hell she was thinking releasing Urban music Especially when she didn't do it before. You are so right. Not to mention, Nelly was extremely hot at the time. That's why that song was debuted on Z-100. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

By the looks of things, it doesn't look like Janet's going to be fully promoting "Make Me" as a single.
No radio add date. No video (that we know of). No live performances scheduled. Looks like they're just throwing the album out in 4th quarter to take advantage of holiday sales and expecting it to be a steady catalog title. I'm glad to be adding this to my collection. However, since it's Janet Jackson, I definitely think this deserves proper promotion! Hopefully, I'm wrong and they just haven't announced anything yet!

Over the past decade I learned to keep my expectations low when it comes to Janet. She won't promote "Make me" because she doesn't want to. Plain and simple and I believe she's just releasing this greatest hits collection as a sort of novelty thing and because she didn't fulfill her contract with Virgin Records before she left in 2006. But I wouldn't expect much from this. It won't sell 10-12 million like Design of the Decade.

Apparently the Ralph Rosario remixes of "Make Me" have leaked.
Haven't heard them yet but I'll check for them online tonight. Perhaps another Billboard #1 Dance hit?
