Yea, but looking at her numbers she sold more outside of the U.S. You can`t look at raw sales numbers and compare them like that - US is 300 million people, the rest of the world is billions. She is certified for 26 million units in the US (but has probably sold around 30 million when undercertified albums are taken into account) and her total worldwide album sales (US included) stand at around 65-70 million albums. She has sold about 50% of those albums to a market that has only 30-35% of the worldwide share in music sales. Add forty million singles and you get the 100 million figure.

Chill out! Janet's about to beat her It is probably not realistic for Janet to get another five No. 1 R&B hits in her career. If the SuperBowl hadn`t happened, then perhaps. The problem with Janet is that, as she aged, she focused more on appealing to Top 40 than to Urban or Urban AC formats. Unfortunately, no radio format is more ageist than Top 40. Furthermore, Janet hasn`t had a No. 1 hit at Urban radio in over a decade (All For You - which wasn`t a very Urban track - is her highest peaking track this decade, reaching No. 4, solely based on its popularity at other formats). The R&B charts use Urban and Urban AC play plus sales of physical (not digital) singles to determine chart placement. So, she`d need a really massive Urban radio hit in order to top the charts. But, she still has a better chance of topping the R&B charts again than the Hot 100. Before anyone asks, Call On Me peaked at No. 5 at Urban and went Top 20 at Urban AC. That wasn`t enough to propel it to No. 1 on the R&B charts - they needed a physical release to do that.

Janet's singles in general this decade (All For You, Someone To Call My Lover, Just A Little While, etc.) are squarely aimed for Top 40 success and were indeed more successful at that format versus Urban.

It was definitely made for Top 40 radio, but wound up doing slightly better at Urban, at least in terms of chart placement (even though it's not something Urban would typically play) simply because there is less anti-Janet vitriol at the Urban format versus at Top 40. If Janet were to make a strong Urban-oriented track and send it for adds at Urban and Urban AC only, and *then* try to cross over to Top 40 if/when it became a success at those core formats, I think her chances for having a hit would be much greater.

It was premiered on there because Virgin expected it to take off based on Janet's previous Hot 100 accomplishments but 20 Y.O. as a whole was aimed towards the Urban market. Janet said herself that she was only getting love from the Urban side after the SB. Damita Jo is a blend of Pop and R&B. The whole album was done before the Superbowl and then rushed to shelves soon after. I know all her singles BEFORE the Superbowl were aimed for Top 40 or higher success because she always got success on there. But 20 Y.O. and Discipline are as Urban as it gets I don't know what the hell she was thinking releasing Urban music Especially when she didn't do it before.

Call on Me is straight up R&B spiced with Hip-hop. We'll have to agree to disagree. I think the production is *very* pop. It had a lot more in common with what was being played at Top 40 at the time than at Urban. It was premiered on there because Virgin expected it to take off based on Janet's previous Hot 100 accomplishments but 20 Y.O. as a whole was aimed towards the Urban market.
Well, it was probably premiered there because it's the biggest radio station in the country. You are right that 20 Y.O. as a whole was aimed more at the Urban market. To clarify, I was speaking more about her singles leading up to and immediately following the SB. The All For You album in particular moved her farther away from Urban than she had probably ever been before. I know all her singles BEFORE the Superbowl were aimed for Top 40 or higher success because she always got success on there. But 20 Y.O. and Discipline are as Urban as it gets
I can't agree that Discipline is as Urban as it gets, at least in its marketing and execution. The first three singles from that project (Feedback, Rock With U, Luv) were pure pop. The Velvet Rope is probably the record with the most consistent Urban appeal that she's released. I don't know what the hell she was thinking releasing Urban music Especially when she didn't do it before.
Janet had always had major success at Urban, although when she was releasing her biggest hits it was a much different format (more pop-leaning) than it is today. She is one of the biggest crossover artists of all time, as her appeal spanned Top 40, Rhythmic and Urban formats alike. That's hard to do.
