She seems clueless about the state of the music industry right now lol Donna Summer's latest CD,released last year, only sold around 69,000 copies.Did she complain? No,she went out there and toured her ass off.Unlike Carly,Donna understands how things work these days.

Exactly. Donna's still doing her thang too. I can't see why Carly, who sold more albums than Donna, can't do the same.

In Starbucks defense, lets get real. Carly got all these locations, which are billions, i mean here in NYC there is one on every block, and if you are programmed to play the cds you sell, so she was getting that push, she got her cd on their counters, all of these things she would NEVER get at a store, at a radio station at this point in her career, so her complaint is really moot. Others have had no issues, McCartney did well, Mellencamp did well, and now this Pete Yorn cd is doing light years better than any he has had on his label which is UNIVERSAL which is good for shit. And they even push new GOOD artists like Anjulie which is the best new artist this year NOT lady fucking gaga.

So carly chill out and get some coffee, you were lucky to sell 127,000, i mean thats three times what i think you would sell at a label. Oh and Joni Mitchell did well too.

I agree.

This is a PERFECTLY fair comparison, and I am willing to bet that even in this economy, Carly Simon could be making money hand over fucking god-damned fist if she toured. Old songs, old arrangements, a band, some backup singers, a few outfits. Done.

Not a good comparison. You won't be seeing anymore new Donna Summer albums after that poor showing.

Actually,Donna has already started work on her next album. She's signed to Burgundy Records,a label that doesn't put alot of emphasis on huge record sales. They have a realistic view of how the music biz works these days.Chaka Khan,Aaron Neville and Gloria Estefan are also signed to this label.None of their albums have reached gold status, but that's okay.Carly would be wise to sign with a record label like this.

Donna is still on Burgundy? I'm really surprised. It doesn't have to reach 500,000 units to be considered a success. Few albums even go gold anymore.

Yep,Donna is still on Burgundy. It's a label that was tailor-made for older artists who are well past their "heyday".Chaka has already recorded two CDs for this label and is working on a third one.I wish there were more labels like this,so that I could get more music from my favorite artists (I mainly listen to artists and bands who are from the 70s).

Madonna's tours are quite elaborate, costume design, crazy set, dance routines, backup dancers... I reckon Carly Simon wouldn't even have to do all that

and seriously, what more could Starbucks have done to promote the CD? Place the album artwork on the coffee cups? lol the truth is,older artists don't really attract alot of "new" fans. The only people who would buy a new Carly Simon CD in 2008 are the longtime fans who listened to her all these years. Those fans have a copy of her Starbucks CD.She should be thrilled with that.

lol....yeah,but for most of those years, she wasn't really signed to a label. She now has a record deal so there's nothing stopping her from recording and releasing new music.

nod The fact that Donna's album charted as well as it did and the fact that she was giving critical raves for her album (for the most part) is enough. Donna will hopefully put the album out...AFTER SHE GETS INDUCTED! wink

Exactly, i think people dont get that, and im surprised that Carly doesnt get that either. I mean what is she 55-60, U gotta know you arent going to be up there selling millions or even 500,000. I mean people just cant get their head around that the USA is not the big brass ring it was, u arent going to ever see what you saw in the later 90's with the whole POP thing. I mean shit, the NEW MC album is gonna be lucky to do 500,000 when its all done with, and that label funneled millions into the project, CARLY got a third of that with no work at all except recording it, be proud carly.

Yeah i mean its very similar to CMC if people remember that label, they were big at signing bands who left their labels but were big on touring. They had Styx signed in 1996-2004, and they all made a shit load of money off touring and scored a Gold live album in 1996 with "Paradise" which is fucking unheard of to go gold not only on an indie, but with a double live record from a band that hadnt recorded since 1983.

Another artist who took a smart move was Katharine Mcphee (yeah the AI girl), she got picked by BMG, they wanted her to be a rb/pop sex kitten and cash in on her looks, well they sole 480,000 and dropped her (made their money and let her go, thats how it works now AI kids) but it took a BLIND guy (andrea boccelli) to notice this girl could fucking sing like no one else, talked to a few people got her on his shows and albums, David Foster is working with her, they got her on Verve now, and have totally shot down that image that was created by BMG. and brought her back as a singer.
