Bob Dylan @ Greek Theater, Berkeley I saw Dylan last night!
Damn, he has a good band. Really understated, tasteful, bluesy, twangy. Lead guitar by Charlie Sexton (who's posters I'd seen in 1986, but whose music I'd never heard) Nice song selection. Most I didn't know, but every fourth song or so was a classic. Sometimes he sounds like he's covering his own material, as it's been radically re-arranged. His voice is rough, but the singing is truly the star of the evening. Love it or hate it, his voice, phrasing, and eccentric note choices are one of a kind. There is simply no one who sings like him unless they're imitating him. He basically is a jazz singer in a different genre. And for two hours he proved what a virtuoso he is (as incomprehensible as that may be to some). Not a single phrase is a vocal cliche or stock phrase as you might see from a prettier voice on American Idol. It's a creation all his own. And since it's Dylan & Berkeley I got a free contact high! His web site has a great feature, too, where the setlists are posted after each show. Each song then links to multiple albums on which they might appear (including live releases, Greatest Hits) and gives you the opportunity to listen & buy the song.

I went to the show on Saturday and it was great. I was about four people back on the left side, it was cool to see Dylan that close. I almost went last night also, and after seeing the setlist I wish I had. His voice sounds better than ever.

I sat right in the center, pretty far back though. Now I kind of wish I'd taken one of the side seats where I could have been closer. I noticed the setlist was totally different for Saturday. I recognize lot more songs from Sunday's. My Legacy

If art is the attempted external reconstruction of the soul, Dylan’s design is likely going to withstand the elements longer than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
I’m checking out this website feature now. Thanks.

I’m checking out this website feature now. Thanks. Well said! No doubt he expresses himself as well as anyone. I noticed how little he spoke during the concert, and figured the obvious reason was that he speaks through his art. He doesn't need to say he wrote the song for a girl, the song expresses itself as much as is necessary. That is the amazing thing about him, though is his ability to be who he is without apology. Even though his music itself is not as adventurous as, say, the Beatles, his expression is always unique. My Legacy
