Female vocalists

I've seen the threads about Christine Agueliera, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga, but I'm wondering if there are any other female vocalist you listen to and enjoy. Someone you'd thoroughly recommend.

For myself I'd say you have to hear Ceu, a Brazilian singer. You can hear her song Malenmolentia or Samba na Sole on youtube. She is a fusion of soul, afro beats and jazz. Also the ex Morcheeba vocalist now solo artist Skye Edwards. Her voice is heaven, best Morcheeba album was the Big calm but her new tracks "What's wrong with me" & Feel good, are great too. Anyone here like Katie Tungstall or Zoe Johnston from Faithless?

What do you listen to, other than the mentioned ones?

I like Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power.

I think 'The Greatest' is one of the best songs written this decade.

This dame...

And she has her own share of versatility as well.

As for the younger divas...

I'm finding myself listening to these two lately.

I've never been able to get into Ledesi, even though people keep saying she's great. I don't know. I think it's because I'm so disappointed in the crop of contemporary singers that have come on the scene within the past 15 years or so, it's hard for me to give any of them a chance because I just assume that they all suck. lol

Well you sure doing yourself a disservice smile

I wasn't into Ledesi either untill recently when she released her latest album(which is considered to be her weakest by some of her fans confuse).

I don't know, I heard Alone in the radio while driving to my house(which is a miracle since I divorced the radio 5 years ago) and this song hit a raw nerve.

Basically, I support her for the same reason you don't,,,,,lack of real vocalist in the past 15 years.

Her, Lalah Hathaway, Adrian Evans, Lina and the likes, are good enough to make a cynic like me shut up wink

From singing back up for Sylvester....

To being a part of Two Tons Of Fun....

To being a part of The Weather Girls....

To singing on songs like this, only to have the groups put a skinny bitch in the video.....

To becoming a solo artist....

Martha Wash has been around since the 1970s and has a loud powerful voice like someone like Aretha Franklin or Patti LaBelle but puts it to better use because she puts it on hard slammin' jams.

Girl I was just playing Ledisi's album last night! Great stuff. I don't get how some of her fans think it's weak. It's sure as hell not! Love her cover of Buddy Miles' "Them Changes"! headbang

Thanks for the tips. All talented yes. Nice to see the progression of Martha Walsh. She does keep it upbeat without losing soul. Hard to find equals to Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Whitney...

This is Skye Edwards. I love her voice and her lyrics.

Hell yeah, me too eek Momma hated her version though lol and she loves Ledisi.

I mean I can understand where they coming from,,,I bought/downloaded her previous album to catch up on her and I noticed a certain pattern she kept sticking with,,,which is cool.

But the reason why I ADORE the new album so much, is the same one they dislike it I guess - variety music they don't want her to change her style, and there's nothing I want from an artist than the occasional "change" switch nod

I don't know what hit me the minute I heard Alone, thats EXACTLY the moment where I became a new/hopefully lifelong fan mushy

I'm in love with Fiona Apple's lyrics, and her voice that can change from silky to sullen in an instant.

I don't like her songs that much. But her vocal ability is top notch.

Vanessa Amorosi

Lara Fabian is good but she's similar to Celine Dion.

Jazmine Sullivan is amazing imo

I LOVE this girl. She needs a record deal.

Eva Cassidy is my favorite.

Norah Jones easily from this decade has opened a door that has been closed for awhile. Lucinda Williams is another, Alison Krauss probably one of the best never spoken of, and id say Annie Lennox is probably the best soul singer of the last 25 years. Latina Singer Melina Leon would be another, new artist Stefani Vara is one people should get into, unique vocals, excellent songwriter, she has a digital only album out now, and also is recording an acoustic track filled album down in Texas as i write this.
