I've always loved this one as well as the follow-up "I'll Try Something New". I love the sound of the instrument being played in the two songs. It reminds me of the days of dining in the Chinese restaurants back when they were dark and candle-lit, had that type of music playing in the background, and seemed romantic. Nowadays, they are brightly lit with buffets and television sets playing BET.

I've always loved all things oriental from food to decor. Hell, parts of my house looks like you just stepped into China or Japan. lol

I love houses that have Chinese/Japanese like literature on the walls. I got a little Japanese decoration on the side of my wall near my door. lol

You mean like the little symbols they use when they write? I've got a huge screen with those behind my couch. Then I've got about three vases with the same symbols and a rug with those symbols under a glass and stone coffee table. Not to mention the four black panels on the wall with the pale faced geisha girls and another screen with rice paper and an uplight behind it shining through. And I almost forget the two porcelan figures of geisha girls I gave my mother years ago but still haven't reclaimed them after her death. Oh, and the dragon I need to go get too. Hell, I've got a regular little Chinatown going on here. lol

This song has such a great, 'sincere' feel to it, I have it on a mix cd in one of my books. Now I'll have to dig it up and give it a spin.

This and 'Boogie' are the only songs I know from them, are any other singles worth checking out?
Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

I just watched this, for the first time since it aired 20 year ago. You know something Timmy, that left a lump in my throat!! Let some of these "chicken headed" so-called artist try to sing, let alone re-write a song like that!! Damn!! This is going back into my ipod's "heavy rotation", playlist.

lol @ "chicken-headed" so called artists, I feel you tho... Janice Marie Johnson practically wrote her own version of what she thought the song was trying to portray. Even the original translation of Kyu Sakamoto's version was indecipherable, lol

I once saw an episode of Casey Kasem's, "America's Top Ten", and I could have sworn that I heard Casey saying, that this song was based on an old Japanese folk song, about a man who was in love with a girl. Her father did not agree with the relationship and he had him locked up. He sings this song, while in jail. Janice got wind of it and re-wrote the song, based on that tale. Maybe I was dreaming, but I could have sworn I saw it.

No you're right. I think when Janice was told what the original song meant, she said "it can be interpreted differently" so in her case, she made the song about a bad relationship.
