Getz/Gilberto

I was just re-listening to this classic album over the weekend, and was just re-floored as to just how good this record is!!! Does anyone else agree? Stan Getz is an amazing sax player and a legend, but it's the strummings and silky voice of Joao Gilberto and the soothing voice of Joao's wife, Astrud, that REALLY makes this record and their other similar Brazilian jazz recordings absolute classics!!! This duo and sometimes trio just blows my mind sometimes! Anyone up for a little discussion on some of this jazz?? If not, just know what I'm talking about and go to your record store and check it out! smile

that album will always have a special place in my heart. my dad played jazz horn and had a lot of good music in our home when i was a kid, and that album was played frequently. my last name is gilbert, and so, i sort of felt like there was a bond to the gilberto's. antonio carlos jobim was a really good writer, and several classic tunes are on the album

Cool!! Yeah, this album has a special place in my heart too. And that Astrud's such a cutie, too! LOL! Jazz Samba is pretty cool too! And, I'm pretty much a fan of most of Antonio Carlos Jobim's stuff too! My dad played some jazz frequently when I was a kid too, but the appreciation and love for it really didn't hit me 'til I started seeking it out on my own in my teens!

Excellent isn't even the word to describe it! You should also pick up some of their other collaborations too, if you haven't already!

Hey, i like it! The album's not just excellent, it's "excellant"! lol

If u r partial 2 a little bossa nova, u may enjoy a collaboration,"Casa", released last year as a loving tribute 2 Antonio Carlos Jobim by Ryuichi Sakamoto & cellist Jacques Morelenbaum with his wife Paula doing a fine job on vocals. I accept that these tribute albums often sound like a recipe 4 disaster but this 1 is definitely an exception & is well worth checking out, though it certainly won't b every1's cuppa.

Michael Franks homage 2 Jobim,"Abandoned Garden" from '95, is not quite as effective, though it still has its moments.

Muito Bom!!! eu adoro o bossa nova.

GREAT THREAD!!! I love Bossa Nova, you guys should also check out Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso.

Also there is a excellent artist named Djavan, go to kazaa and download the song Oceano and you will see what I am talking about. One more artist would be Daniela Mercury.

My ex-fiance is a Brasileira so I was exposed to a lot of brazilian music

I definitely have to get down there to Brazil one of these days cuz the women down there look FANTASTIC!! LOL! But for now, the music will have to do! smile I've heard a few of Gal Costa's stuff, and it's not bad at all, too! Have you heard any of Joao's daughter's (Bebel Gilberto) music yet? I'm more into the Brazillian jazz stuff than anything hard hitting or techno stuff, and it sounds like she goes there a bit.

Oi Alexnrmnd, Tudo Bem!!!

I have been to Rio, Sao Paulo and Bahia many times, my fiance is from Rio de Janiero and my friend before you leave this earth you MUST travel to Rio. I am traveling back to Rio in March for Carnaval.

Anyway most of the artist I mentioned are jazz based. I am telling you go download some Djavan and you will not be disappointed.

There is a really cool song by Gal Costa and Tim Maia titled "Dia De Domingo". Check it out!!!

I'll definitely check that song out, but I may heard it already. But, it's off to WinMX I go! And you're right, I MUST get down to Rio before I leave this earth. Hell, before my youth leaves me completely!! LOL! From what I've seen in pics, on TV, and heard from folks, I have truly been missing out!!

Wow -- what a timely thread! I was just listening to the Getz/Gilberto CD a couple of days ago. My father liked it so much he gave me a cassette so I could tape it for him. Classic material!

If you like your Bossa Nova a bit more contemporary, check out Thievery Corporation...very cool shit, they've done several things with Bebel Gilberto!

Burn that sucker for him, don't tape it. Unless, he has no CD player! But you're right...pure classic material!
