nod Many more real soul singers here and in the UK that would take Whino's lunch singing without hardly trying.

Ledisi could slay her in her sleep.

But I'm not going to talk about why Amy Crackhouse get the praise and these sisters don't, its redundant already nod.

YES! Thank you. Great music. Your version was a great tribute and awesome. That was you singing and playing, right? Well, of course it was. DOH...I had to play the ending guitar bit over and over. Finally something that "moved" me. Loved your "talking" voice too. Pretty sexy there, Christopher.

Damn....I wish I could post on that thread. Thank you sooooo much for sending this to me. You are amazing!

Rick's career was not done in by any record company; unless you are thinkin' Motown/Gordy Records should have supervised how he spent his time and money. Everything after Throwin Down , but for a few singles, was intellectually, musically and spiritually lacking. This broke my heart for years. In some of his later interviews you could witness his genius, but often it was slanted by his emotional response to whatever he was speaking on. Garden of Love, Street Songs and Throwin Down - that's the Godhead Triology right there - feelin' the spirit.

I would add 'Bustin Out Of L7' to the list. That's one of his best albums.

Even bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains etc have the right to express themselves. IMO I don't think they killed the rock genre, they introduced a new level to it and that's why they are still selling records today.

IMO the idea that 'grunge' bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains KILLED rock music is total nonsense.

As every other style or sound that became popular in the mainstream, it just became copied, because it did SELL records. Like all these hair-metal bands did ride the 'wave' in the eighties, singing about 'broken homes' (the godawfull Papa Roach) and 'aping' Eddie Vedders vocal style (the godawfull Creed and Nickelback) simply did SELL.

But just because these type of bands were / are popular in the charts, doesnt mean you can't find a very versatile and diverse rock-landscape among so called B- and C-artists!
When i talk about 'B' and 'C' i don't mean that degrading at all. I talk about artists who dont have (a lot of) chartsucces, but who basically make the music they want to and who offer a lot of quality by doing so. Some of them might be 'critics darlings', others might be very obscure, but the idea of looking at some handfull of artists who score 'big' in the charts and equate them to the 'state of rockmusic' is simply ignorant.
That group of B and C-artists (in terms of popularity) is and has always been as diverse as can be, and many times offer more quality in their music then the 'big names'. Of course that doesnt only apply to 'rock'-musicians, but to soul-musicians, hip-hop artists, singer-songwriters and Fado-singers too...lol

When you are staring yourself blind on what is 'hot' in the charts, and equal record sales with importance, you miss the point: that there were, are and always will be dozens of great musicians doing 'their thing', maybe without real chart-succces, but always expressing themselves, keeping their genre alive and often offering more quality then their commercially scoring 'brothers' do.

Thank you! Those bands(along with Soundgarden & Pearl Jam), kicked major ass.

It doesn't get any better than 'Dirt' & 'Superunknown'.

I take the first albums of Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden ANY day above the cheesy disco-funk of Rick James. biggrin
