New Order 'Retro' out today!

Go pick it up. I just got mine for $50 with a bonus 5th disc and I'm sure it's going to be worth every penny. The packaging alone is astonishing. I can't wait to dig into it. I'll be back with a full review once I'm done listening. If you've ever considered getting into this band or are already a fan, you can't go wrong with this box set. I highly recommend it! biggrin

Here's a review:

THE ROLLING STONE REVIEW

The greatest band to consistently and artfully mix rock and dance music, New Order did everything right: craft well-written, sonically adventurous singles ("Blue Monday"), create quintessential albums of their era (1985's Low-Life), commission influential club remixes (Shep Pettibone's mix of "Bizarre Love Triangle") and perform a career's worth of soul-stirring live shows. Treating its four discs as distinct samplings of each of these strong suits, Retro ropes in outside experts to select its track listings. Although this results in some duplications (three versions each of "Crystal," "Regret" and "Fine Time"), and a few omissions (no "Love Vigilantes"), the usually inspired selections reflect the versatile Manchester, England, quartet's unfailing knack for tuneful passion. And for all of New Order's studio elegance and club-accessible mutability, the live disc is radically, raucously raw.

They're lazy fuckers and ever so slightly overrated. If they were more prolific i would consider them a great band, but they don't record enough and when they do every album is hyped to death and usually to disguise the fact it's not actually that good. It's not cool to diss New Order though.

So why are you doing it then?

I agree that they could be a bit more prolific, but to say that they are not a great band just because they are not that prolific is just bullshit. Over the years (especially the 80's) New Order has proven to be a consistent producer of quality music, trendsetting and exploring new boundaries. Besides New Order, I think you may say that band-members like Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner have proven there songwriting- and musician-skills in various side-projects like i.e. Monaco (Hook) and Electronic (Sumner with Johnny Marr)!
Besides everything, Hook's (and therefore New Order's) basslines are slammin'!
