Italian tenors guesting on pop records...

Is it just me or is this phenomenon really irritating? Has it EVER worked effectively? Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli? U2 & Pavarotti? Elton John & Pavarotti? Pavarotti doing it irks me most. He's garrish, incomprehensible, and hammish (-- and probably smells like it too). Anyone with me? Anyone hate this?

it does seem like some sorta desperation attempt for credibility on the part of the artists using them...

it def'ly ain't my thing...

and when they come on tv my dog howls...seriously...

Well, Opera itself seems hammish to me...

Remember when generation X all of a sudden decided to embrace Tony Bennet sometime back in the late 90s? This seems akin to that.

Tont Bennett was Hot in the early 90's.Red Hot Chilli Peppers,KD Lang all did something with Him.also. TOny took a Page out of Natelie Cole's Book&Did Cover Projects. His Sinatra tribute Album, then Duke ELlington Tribute Album&then a Billie Holiday Album.Tony was rolling 10 years back.He did a Unplug Album on MTV as well.I was glad too see Him."I Left My Heart in San Francisco" is still one of my Jams.also the Cat is a Helluva Painter.Frank Sinatra called Him the Best Singer in Pop Music 11 Years Back.

Actually, I love "Miss Sarajevo" and Pavarotti's contribution to it. The others I haven't heard so I can't say. In the case of U2 it makes sense with that song. It adds to the eastern European, downcast old world theme they're trying to capture. It doesn't seem to be there purely for decorative or trendy purposes.

yes, that one works. it seems like a female opera voice can work better in a pop/rock song than a male on.

It's not exactly the first time in his career that Tony Bennet was "hot," it was also due to timing of the Unplugged show. A trend.

Sure, she does a good job. But that song is one of the lowlights of the album for me.

Don't be mad. I'm just not big on over-the-top angry Janet Jackson songs.

I don't hate it like I hate Black Cat. It would just fall pretty low on that album if I had to put all the tracks in order.

i think it falls under its own weight. like it's just trying too hard, much like "3 Chains o' Gold" but i know you really like that one too. i guess just different tastes

oh yeah I know.My GrandParents turned Me on to Him when I was a Little Boy.back in the early 80's when I was a Kid He had this Movie with Frank Sinatra,Elkie Sommers&Stephen Boyd called "The Oscar" that came out in 1966 that I always watched when it came on TV.He was Co-Starring in a Movie in the Mid-60's with Sinatra was a Big thing then.alos His Marches with Dr.King&Harry Belefonte got Him much Props in My House as a Kid.I always dug the way He sung George Harrison's "Something".
