Prince & Jay-Z W/ the slow prince news cycle, I'm left w/ this:
I recently heard an interview w/ Jay-Z where he was talking about how music today is becoming talentless, and how artists failing to use live instruments in place of auto-tunes, etc... He sounds just like Prince in 2004. Similarly, he was discussing artistic control of music, etc... Again, just like Prince from 1993-2000. Jay-Z could actually revive Prince's music to make him relevant again - and I know Jay-Z has said he would love to work with Prince. Jay-Z is married to Beyonce, whom Prince respects and has worked with. People think there's any shot of this happening? Imagine a Prince produced Jay-Z record, or a Prince album produced by Kanye and Jay-Z. Face it, they make hits that get played in clubs and on the radio - two areas where Prince has been entirely absent.

The only rapper I would like to see Prince work with is NaS, y'all know Jigga and Kanye ain't got shit on NaS.

it will give prince more popularity and airplay thats for sure

Working with anyone current is not going to get much airplay. Airplay is owned by the corporations-if your not affiliated with them, there is no profit to gain to play your music. I also feel as Prince starts to regain his master tapes, the radio stations will have no incentive to play his old music. Thus, isolating Prince music even further. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Kanye? Really? Because he has hits?!? Kelly Clarkson has hits too, and I don't want to hear her work with Prince either.... A couple years back, I saw Kanye "live" on an awards show, I hadn't listened to him before but thought the performance was pretty good, so I checked out his first 2 albums... I couldn't find one song on them that I ever wanted to hear again... just crap. No thanks. If Prince was to work with a Hip Hop artist I'd pick ?Love. Also, Prince doesn't get played on the radio because he works outside the "system" and therefore the payola players have no reason to promote or support him. So, until the monopoly is broken or until he decides to play the game by their rules again, he won't be given the chance to have the kind of success you seem to be hoping for. No - but he uses live instruments (a full band) in his performances; and his beef is that today people are simply using auto-tunes and machines instead of these instruments. As to the other comment re: radio play -- fair enough. But clubs and D.J.'s aren't playing Prince anymore either....and even prince admits those are legit (eye am the DJ, I can make you jam...)

Jay-Z is overrated! It's a shame the Busta Rhymes collaboration a few years ago never happened. That would have been great! ThankUPrince!

That's a HORRIBLE idea. Prince can't just produce someone like The Neptunes, or Rodney Jerkins, Jam/Lewis, or whoever. Although they have a "sound", they can still work with an artist's sensibilities and style. Nelson George once said, "When Prince produces a record, you get a Prince production." It's true. Prince has a "sound" as an artist, but as a producer, it's a big production. There's no room for the artist. It'd be like Jay-Z rapping over NewPowerSoul instrumentals. Nothing about that would scream "Jay-Z, produced by Prince". It'd be "Prince - featuring Jay-Z". Prince doesn't know how to produce someone. He just knows how to have someone sing over his stuff. The best example of that is Mavis Staples. Incredibly talented, and very unique and memorable trademark voice, yet her singing over Prince's songs left a lot to be desired. Sure, it was good to hear songs like "God Is Alive" or "The Undertaker", but come on. It was a "Prince production". The best songs on her first Paisley Park album were the songs NOT written or produced by Prince. The ones that had that old school yet current feel. They were good for a woman who was 50 years old at the time. Not "Jaguar", or "Interesting". And I can't imagine a collaboration I'd be less interested in than Kayne and anyone. He even ruined "American Boy" with Estelle. Thank God for the "no rap" version.

He is onlly interested in making music that appeals to himself and a few hard-core fans, so that would take THAT idea off the table real quick.

What is that? Audio NSFW! http://www.southparkstudi...ps/224099/ I haven't seen this episode, will have to watch it now! I guess Comedy Central ran the episode for two hours straight the day after the VMAs. I LOVE Matt, Trey and Comedy Central! And here's the full episode: http://www.southparkstudi...des/220762 [Edited 9/22/09 11:37am]

South Park lost it's funny appeal years ago. After the first 3 or 4 years, it was over.

It's hilarious to me to see Prince fans saying they wouldn't support other artists because they are "jerks." I can say for certain I love Prince music about as much as anyone, and have respect for the man -- but I think it'd be fair to say Prince is a "jerk." He may not have been as big an a** hole as Kanye w/ some of his outbursts - but he is kinda a jerk - but we excuse it, it's just who he is - he's not outgoing, he does his own thing. I'm sure Kanye does alot himself - he just has issues. Judge them on their talent - which reasonable minds can disagree on -- but not their personality (especially if you're a prince fan).

Jay-Z is one of the very few Hip-Hop artist that I'd like to see Prince work with. I think they can come up with something real hot, for real.
I would not be surprised at all if Prince influenced Jay any with this relvelation about real music and real musicians. I sat a couple of rows away from Jay at one of the Musicology shows in NYC back in 2004. I was highly impressed to see him there and he looked like he was studying Prince, so based on what I saw, I don't think Jatriq is off base any with his assessment. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
