Catherine Russell walked over to a cloth draped table pushed a button on a turntable. Side One: Babylon Sisters Hey Nineteen Glamour Profession Catherine Russell walked over to the same cloth draped table, flipped the record and dropped the needle. Side Two: Gaucho Time Out Of Mind My Rival Third World Man The rest of the set consisted of... Godwhacker Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More (Walter Becker on lead vocal) Black Cow Bodhisattva Show Biz Kids (Done with a killer JB groove) Black Friday (super shuffle) Dirty Work (featuring The Ladies alternately singing the verses) Love Is Like An Itchin' In My Heart (band intros) Peg Josie (wonderful Jim Beard intro) Don't Take Me Alive My Old School Kid Charlemagne Reelin' In The Years (encore) Last Tango in Paris (band outro) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Tunes (Request Night) Teenie's Blues (band warm up tune) Black Friday Aja Hey Nineteen Peg Dirty Work Bodhisattva Rikki Don't Lose That Number Home At Last Doctor Wu Any Major Dude Will Tell You Do It Again Love Is Like An Itchin' In My Heart (band intros) Babylon Sisters Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More Black Cow Josie (Jim Beard intro) Don't Take Me Alive Kid Charlemagne Reelin' In The Years (encore) Last Tango in Paris (band outro) On both nights, B-3 player Sam Yahel (http://www.samyahel.com/home.html) opened the show. 
He was joined by Michael Leonhart (trumpet) and Walt Weiskopf (sax), part of the Steely Dan horn section. What a joy to hear 10 musicians (11 counting Larry Carlton) and 3 super competent vocalists playing/singing sophisticated Pop music for adults. (Not an autotune or backing track in sight) Songs constructed with lyrics that took some thought surrounded by music based on well crafted compositions and arrangements. Performances involving the skillful playing of instruments as the core and not lavish stage sets, costume changes or dance troupes to distract your attention from weak songs or a performer's questionable talent. My only minor complaints were a rather muddy bass sound and at times not enough Becker guitar and Beard keys in the mix the first night. Also, Fagen's vocals tended to get a bit raggedy as the night wore on. But the bottom line here is that you can't beat great songs played extremely well. Beyond seeing/hearing Larry Carlton play with the band, the highlight of the show for me was the powerhouse drumming of Keith Carlock... 
...The guy is just a freakin' beast. It's the third Steely Dan tour i've seen him do and he gets better every time. This is a band i'd pay to see every time they came through town because i'm assured to get my money's worth. tA  Tribal Disorder

What other band has successfully combined, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Fusion, Blues, etc, etc, etc into thier music!!?? And did it with style and musicality.

I'm curious - you haven't really told us what you think of contemporary live acts.  I know a lot of people get sick of Do It Again and think it's overplayed but it's still one of my top 5 from them.

Great photos, too. You take all those? Who said that I was referring to "contemporary live acts"? 
Here's another element of their skills. Many of their most popular tunes have been slightly rearranged (Do It Again was one) which adds an element of surprise for the audience. And as musicians, i'm sure even they may get tired of playing a song the same way. To that point however, there are some that don't appreciate any change in the stock arrangement. (Do that to "...somebody else's favorite song.") This was apparent when Fagen announced that due to requests from the fans, they were going to play the "original arrangement" to Reelin' In The Years. Finally, no these aren't my photos. I took some but they didn't come out as well as the ones I stoled from cyberspace. Here's one I took backstage after the show of...

...Blues for Tony (which is the CD version of the Holdsworth/Pasqua/Haslip/Wackerman gig) When you order that one, you get... 
...Krantz-Carlock-Lefebvre for another $12. The only problem is the Holdsworth disc isn't released until the 19th. 
(No "Bee's Foot" syndrome.

I was fortunate to be sitting about 12 feet of front of Donald Fagen's setup on Tuesday Night in Chicago. I have been a Steely Dan fan since the Aja album. I am such of fan of the album, I named both my daughter and my brand new Fender Jazz bass after the album.
I did not attend Aja night but I knew Gaucho wasn't too many people's favorite album so I'd figure I'd get killer seats and I was right. I was in third row and in heaven!!! :cloud: I love Time Out of Mind and Hey Nineteen so much that I thought I would cry when they started. After the did both sides of the album, I was hoping that I would at least get some of the the Aja album. Sure enough, Freddie Washington started that riff, you SD fans know what I'm talking about and I actually did cry. Black Cow is the song that inspired me to want to play bass. We also got Josie and Peg and I thought I would lose my mind. 
I remember thinking there was no other place I would have rather been and wondered why I had taken so long to see them as big a fan as I am. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

See, if you had listened to me and gone to see them years ago, you could've been crying a lot sooner.

I actually kept debating about going because the tickets cost a grip.
But I am so glad I did. 
I turned 40 last month and felt I had accomplished so much in my life that anything that happens at this point is just gravy. Seeing Steely Dan on Tuesday night made me feel like I could die happy. | |
