Speaking of his R&B production, I love what he did with James Debarge...

yes he is musically talented
"one wish" Deborah Cox is a great prod. I also like "Summerbreeze" "Tonite" is great too - but you have to credit Kleer "Tonight" for the hook & basis of the song there...

This one has potential but the type of drum machines he's using on the song make it sound shit hoppish and I can't tolerate even an ounce of shit hop on a song. It lacks some harder pounding drums and a bassline to make it funky. Andy is a four letter word.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...SC_aVJ56_k I'm just talking about the music, not the song. This is one of my favorite Quik productions. Well, overlooking the talking over the music and just listening to the music itself, those type drums sound better than a lot I've heard in shit hop but they they still are too soft sounding and there's no bassline. Hard drums and a bassline are what make a song sound funky and without them, most songs just sound bland. Not to mention, the tempo is waaaay too slow. When I say things like this, a lot of people say...."Well, when you add those things, you are just trying to make them make funk and everyone doesn't have to make funk". Well, yeah, when you think about it, maybe that is the problem I have with it, they have taken the funk elements out and it's no longer funk and no longer danceable. But no, everyone doesn't have to make funk. But anybody worth a damn would....and should. . . . [Edited 9/29/09 20:23pm] Andy is a four letter word.

That's the verse I thought about when I read the title of this thread! Raunchy rap DJ Quick, loved him from back in the day. That Puzzy Medley be jamming hard, with El Debarge in it! The message you are about to hear are not meant for transmission. Should ONLY be accessed in the privacy of your mind. Words are so intense so if you dare to listen.Take off your clothes and meet me between the lines.

But no, everyone doesn't have to make funk. But anybody worth a damn would....and should. Though I'm a fan of hip-hop and an artist myself, I know where you're coming from. Generally speaking I like to make jams myself that are faster than your average hip-hop joint, with harder drums and funky basslines. I like to introduce people to the funk. I think Quik strives to do that a lot of the time as well, and he's a funk fan and a talented musician as well. I think if I went through Quik's catalog a bit, I'd certainly be able to find a few jams that you would enjoy. I'm certainly not on any kind of mission to convert you to hip-hop though - just making a point that not everything that falls under the hip-hop umbrella sounds like the "shit hop" that you despise. |

I agree, DJ Quik is super talented. That's cool about Quik being a protegee of Roger's, didn't know that before. Q did an album recently with Kurupt (of the DPG) called 'Blaqkout' and a song worth checking out is 'Hey Playa'.

Yep, Roger was the one who taught Quik & Erick Sermon how to play the "talk box".

THIS IS MY FUCKIN' JAM. Especially the second verse. I was listening to this last week while cleaning the house and got hyper than a mug. My dogs were like Now compton is the place where the homeboys chill, you see But then I found that it wasn’t no place for me Cause way back in the day somebody musta wanted me to quit Because they broke in my house and cold stole my shit They musta thought that I was gonna play the punk role Just because my equipment got stole But I ain’t goin out like no sucker-ass clown They found they couldn’t keep a dope nigga down So here’s some bass in your face, muthafucka silly sucker- Ass clocker, now you’re duckin, cause you can’t stop a brother Like the quiksta, because I’m true to the game You’re lame, and things ain’t gonn’ never be the same Cause a nigga like the quik is takin over I really don’t think I should have to explain It, oh yeah, I’m a dog, but my name ain’t rover And I’m the kinda nigga that’s feelin no pain Sometimes I have to wear a bullet-proof vest Because I got the ’cpt’ sign written across my chest A funky dope brother never ceases to impress My name is dj quik, so you can fuck the rest I’m comin like this, and I’m comin directly Cause suckers get dain-bramaged if I’m doin damage quite effectively Rhymin is a battlezone, and suckers have no win Cause I’m a veteran from the c-o-m-p-t-o-n Kick it

Quik....is a "supa-produsa"- in a true sense of the word! His downfall has been he gives dope tracks to less caliber rappers! Dre had Cube,Ren,Snoop,Em,DPG! Quik had 2nd to none, AMG,etc. Later Quik got Pac,Jay on a few joints.
Quik also used Rob Bacon alot! Other than his own releases...he put it down on the Penthouse Players Clique,2nd to None,Suga Free, Mausburg...in short Quik is that dude...who's who in hip-hop knows

After listening to "Born and Raised in Compton" for the first time in the 7th grade, that song still goes hard. [Edited 10/4/09 10:40am] I've lost the use of my heart, But I'm still alive, Still looking for the life, The endless pool on the other side, It's a wild wild west, I'm doing my best, I'm a soldier of love, Every day and night, I'm soldier of love, All the days of my life.
