I just finished watching the episode and it's pretty funny. They really skewer Kanye & Carlos Mencia. It's also great satire on creative rights issues.

South Park lost it's funny appeal years ago. After the first 3 or 4 years, it was over.

Try to make a point in watching the Jonas Bros. episode, if that ain't funny and a bit risque', I don't know what is! wink

They have 2 different styles but I think they respect each other so who knows. I never try to figure out what Prince will do next. It's pointless.

I've never really been big on Jay-Z, but his interview on Bill Maher makes me want to at least check his music out and give it a fair listen.

Glad to hear him say what most of us have thought for some time. Slightly off topic, but the brisk sales of the Beatles remasters really illustrates the shitiness of current music. My local Costco had a HUGE cardboard display with a few hundred copies of the Beatles remasters. When I went back this past Sunday, all but a handful had sold. Yesterday, they were all gone. We're talking about 40+ year old music here. It made me ask myself what current top 40 artists today are putting out music with that kind of longevity.

No one's going to be interested in Lady Gaga's back catalog 40 years from now, and there won't be much demand for a 40-year-anniversary re-issue of "My Humps", that's for sure.

I had the same thought after Prince's Superbowl performance. What en vogue artists of today will be able to perform their songs to a stadium full of people 20 years from now and have them all singing along? Anyone?

Dave Mathews will be around in 20 years. I guarantee it. He's awesome. No fluff either. Other than him, I can't think of anyone. confused

Perhaps lackluster Beatles sales and record sales of more established artists are a result of the music buying public which nowadays comprises of mostly teens and even they get their shit through downloading and file sharing. I think if you're an upcoming artist you have an opportunity to make a shit load of money before your flame dies out. If you're an established artists with a decades long career, you should be thankful for whatever money you made and whatever influence you've had on todays acts. Everything else is dust on a shelf.

Nobody's mentioned The Purple Album? It's Jay-Z's Black Album lyrics mixed with Prince's Purple Rain music. There are even some parts where the Prince screams are kept for effect.

I have it, and it's great. I think it's out-of-print (which is funny, because it's not an official release) but you can probably find it on eBay.

No - but he uses live instruments (a full band) in his performances; and his beef is that today people are simply using auto-tunes and machines instead of these instruments.

As to the other comment re: radio play -- fair enough. But clubs and D.J.'s aren't playing Prince anymore either....and even prince admits those are legit (eye am the DJ, I can make you jam...)

As a former club DJ I can assure you that an artist with no radio play may get played in clubs, but not much. The audiences in the clubs want to hear what they are familiar with, if they aren't hearing it on the radio, via videos, or from their friends, they won't be much interested in hearing it in the club. A club DJ that plays too much unfamiliar material won't be DJing that club for long. It's unfortunate, but true. I used to play tracks like Come On, Hot Wit U, SexMe SexMeNot and others, no matter how funky the tune was, I'd lose the crowd, only Kiss, Gett Off, Erotic City & Pussy Control were consistently successful at keeping the dance floor packed...

Well, you can't know if it's funny if you don't watch it. shrug The song video clip is a very minor portion of it and runs only at the end.

Not every episode is hilarious, but they still come up with some gems.

There's one or two episodes a season that really are MUST SEE, it's worth sitting through the rest so as to not miss the gems...

Hell no. I like Kanye and Jay's work but it would not work with Prince's music style. He sounded ridiculous when he tried hip hop/rap back in the early 90s (although Face Down was good, but would never chart today).

Prince could be successful again with a mainstream audience if he did a well publicised interview making him seem normal (since no one thinks he is), stopped the youtube crap, stopped the religious preaching (in public anyway) and joined a mainstream record label (maybe Def Jam since they seem to take good care of their successful artists).

When Jay-Z was heading up Def Jam, why didn't he sign some talented artists who play instruments? I mean come on, the guy was in the driver's seat, why not put his money where his mouth is.

And does Prince really need to have this career 'revived' or made relevant? He's had a good run already, why can't you just be happy he's still making music. Not like he desperately needs it, he's still selling tickets, still gets on TV; Lotusflower.com certainly proves some fans will go all way for him..

How about P collaborating with someone not because it will be a hit or relevant but just because it feels good and just out of the curiosity that maybe it could create something awesome.

I would love to see him jump in a Sonic Youth gig and jam on one of Thurston's mutilated guitars. I'm sure it would give P more cred with the indie/hipster crowd and with folks who buy records and wear ironic t-shirts but I'm more intrigued about how it would sound. I have no clue how it would sound, it would more than likely be really ridiculous!

It would also be cool if he did a bossa nova song with Astrud Gilberto and then have it remixed by Konishi for Pizzicato Five, more than likely it won't be a hit but it would awesome.

Also awesome: Prince working with some scientist to make turn his music into liquid so I can OD on it...just sayin.

Not exactly a "collaboration" - but Jay Z lyrics to Purple Rain music is quite unique and actually pretty frickin' cool. Made me appreciate Jay Z a little more.

W/ the slow prince news cycle, I'm left w/ this:

I recently heard an interview w/ Jay-Z where he was talking about how music today is becoming talentless, and how artists failing to use live instruments in place of auto-tunes, etc... He sounds just like Prince in 2004. Similarly, he was discussing artistic control of music, etc... Again, just like Prince from 1993-2000.

Jay-Z could actually revive Prince's music to make him relevant again - and I know Jay-Z has said he would love to work with Prince. Jay-Z is married to Beyonce, whom Prince respects and has worked with.

People think there's any shot of this happening? Imagine a Prince produced Jay-Z record, or a Prince album produced by Kanye and Jay-Z. Face it, they make hits that get played in clubs and on the radio - two areas where Prince has been entirely absent.

I admit to having almost ZERO knowledge on Jay-Z ....so I ask this question.
Does Jay-Z play any instruments?

A few years ago Jay Z came out with his Black Album and said he named it that because he heard Prince had an album by that name and he heard it was good. He invited Prince to do some tracks for him but the purple one didn't bite. Jay would love to work with him as well, but ...

And that's what makes him worse than the other shit hoppers because he is a sellout. If he likes live instruments well enough to have them in concert, then he needs to have them on his albums also. Concerts don't change musical styles because they are not heard by near as many people as album versions which get radio airplay. Concerts are going to influence very few up and coming artists to make real music but an album with real music getting major airplay will.

He doesn't put real instruments on his albums because he knows the radio will never play his songs if he does. Hell, he probably couldn't even get a recording contract with a label if he did. Why? Because if real instruments caught on, it would cost the labels more to make these songs and it could threaten the existence of shit hop.

If he doesn't have instruments on his album, and I'm talking real drums and bass, not just a little horn or something, then he needs to sit his hypocrital ass down and shut the fuck up because he's a sellout.

No, they get their music from the record store just like an individual would unless they are some sort of huge big time club in a major city or something.

I worked as a club DJ for a few months back in the early 1990s as a favor to a friend who was the club owner. We were competing with the gay club across the street which ordered their records from a place called Dixie Records in Atlanta which sold 12 Inch singles since vinyl had faded out of most stores back then but club DJs were still using vinyl to mix. They also got their records from Ultimix Records and Hot Tracks Records which were labels that remixed popular dance songs and sold them to clubs only. We didn't have the connections though so we just sent someone on a trip to Atlanta to buy a bunch of 12 Inch singles.

However, in the straight clubs though, they didn't have the good taste to be into the house and dance music so they just did away with their turntables and bought two CD players. They played the same dull shit hop the radio played and didn't even mix it. Even if I hadn't been gay, I would have still gone to the gay clubs because the straight clubs had absolutely no taste in music and just accepted the bullshit the radio fed them. Sadly though, the gay clubs nowadays are doing the same thing and I just don't even go out anymore.
