I was JUST thinking about him this morning before I went to bed (about 4 a.m.). I was just thinking about the older music I've been grabbing lately like Rick James, Parliament, Funkadelic, etc, and thought about ol' Curtis. I wish some of these dudes were around making music instead of enjoying retirement.

Don't want to be a spoilsport, but his life didn't seem to be too easy during his final years. confused

Nothing sounds like his unique voice or his just as unique guitar playing, but at least there's the records.... and reissues!

And my personal favorite, KUNG FU!

"My mother borne me in the ghetto..
There was no mattress for my head.
But no she couldn't name me Jesus,
I wasn't white enough she said.

And then she named me "You're Kung Fu".."

No, nothig was easy 4 Curtis after the accident, but at least he still had 1 more great 1 left in 96' with "New World Order", and in turn it inspired Eric Clapton to write "Pilgrim".....

Yep cool I would strongly recommend that all Mr. Mayfield fans to get it this album it's a must have. To think Mayfield had to record his performances line by line. eek

He was paralyzed, and probably had shortness of breath and other ailments so when he recorded, he couldn't do a full take or a full verse, he had to sing things line by line, a few words or a sentence at a time.

I love "The Got Dang Song". The album was a great swan song.

That's possible, because December 26th marks the 10th anniversary of Curtis' passing. I know that we will pay tribute on our radio show, and we're gonna invite some interesting guests.

In the meantime, you can listen to the essence of the Curtis Mayfield sound right here ...

Yep that's right... thanks Super. biggrin Has it been a decade already since Mr. Mayfields passing? Wow... sad I look forward to MrSoulpower radio tribute. cool I loved "The Got Dang Song" too and I thought the duet with Sista Franklin, "Back to Living Again" was tight, a fitting last album from a brilliant, brilliant, artist.
