d'angelo = ex-soulquarian

have y'all heard THIS through the grapevine: d'angelo has stepped out/has been kicked out of the soulquarians. if this is true then i am a very unhappy dude as of this moment. man, these guys we're made to create music together! 'voodoo' has moments of pure genius and d'angelo's 2000 tour.. DAMN! what can i say; it would be a great loss for music, that's for certain. i heard d'angelo supposedly had a quarrel with questlove. well, at least d's got rafael saadiq to do some more joints with like 'lady', 'the line', 'untitled' and.. 'she's always in my hair'. during the 'voodoo' recordingsessions though, there were also a lot of rumors going around; a lot of those were false (too), so..

Hmm...ex-soulquarian? U cant erase Soul. Soul is born Given, and directed in any action a person may take it. There are differences between Badu, Raphel, Meshell, Common, Macy, Dangelo, Roots, etc...

I think Dangelo and Raphel make a DAMN good team. Raphel is one of the greatest musicians & songwriters out in the field now...

No big deal really, "The Soulquarians" was more a loose group of comrades than a firm unit. The hyped comebacks LPs of The Roots, Common and Talib Kweli's were a letdown to say the least (Albeit better than 90% o0f stuff out there) so some fresh impetus for D might be just what the doctor ordered...

agreed. maybe their comebacks haven't been that big as expected, but still the soulquarians DO come up with great shit. first on d'angelo's 'voodoo' ('playa playa', 'chicken grease' and 'spanish joint'). com's 'like water for chocolate' is a great record, which is partially produced by the soulquarians. songs like 'time travelling', 'heat' and 'cold blooded' are mad tunes. bilal's '1st born second' is a great record at times. there's a lot of filler on there, but also a lot of good and different shit. the soulquarian produced 'sometimes' must be the album's best. what to say of badu's 'mama's gun'; this record is beautiful with again a lot of good soulquarian produced tracks ('penitentiary philosophy', 'booty' and 'green eyes'). and ofcourse the fela kuti tribute with a cover of 'water no get enemy'; great tune.
the roots' 'phrenology' wasn't a soulquarian produced album if you ask me. neither was talib kweli's 'quality' (perhaps a track by jay dee aka j dilla, but i could be wrong here). only com's 'electric circus' is really a soulquarian production; this album is as much loved as it is hated. you can't say the soulquarians lost their magic touch on this one. it's just too much against everyones expectations of a record by common; there are still some highlights on that record. take 'i am music' and 'jimi was a rock star'; some mad shit.
d'angelo will probably deliver some good music within that concept he was working on; that raw-dirty-ol'-funk. i hope he will when that time comes.. if that time comes.

Don't get me wrong, "Voodoo" was my favourite album of 2000 (Stankonia second) and "1st Born Second" (second favourite of 2001 after TRC). I've been down with Soulquarians since day one, Erykah, Common et al. Just looking at the inconsistency of the recent three albums in 2002, maybe now's the time to move things on, you know?

okay i hear ya. when hearing d'angelo cover 'she's always in my hair' i was hoping for that guitarwork on 'voodoo'. too bad. after 'voodoo' d'angelo was supposedly thinking about a more guitarbased album; now THAT would be something! it was entitled 'james river'. i'm definitely looking forward to that one if it ever drops. so, i like to see d'angelo try some new shit.
look, i just love 'voodoo' more than 'brown sugar' because of its rawness and funk. that sound was established by d' and the soulquarians; logically i hope to get that sound next time 'round too. even if they don't work on eachothers' albums, they must tour together! that would be hot! only quest once said that the 'voodoo' tour would be a one time thing for that band.. hmm.
