Great sets this past Friday.
Good to hear Unhooked Generation again.

Daisuke Kuroda kicked off with some real Kool & The Gang...

...Soul Vibrations

Who that at the door?
That's "Hoof & Mouth"
Oh, let him in, let him in

...Funky bass laid down by none other than the late Jaco Pastorius.

Picking up from something Daisuke Kuroda played (Pearly Queen - Quit Jive' In)...

...Funky Fast Bump - Outlaw Gang

Both tunes appear on a Jazzman comp I have - Florida Funk: 1968-1975

A few other Florida acts featured:
Bobby Williams - All The Time
Little Beaver - Everybody Has Some Dues To Pay
Weston Prim & Blacklash - Spider Web (some old friends from the 70s)

And the fabulous...

...Baby Don't Cry - Third Guitar

Axe me no ?'s and I'll tell you no lies...that was 'fiyah' Black.

I know I'm being greedy and you've already explained your recording process, but I still wished you'd had cranked that Axe up throughout the song jus'a little bit mo'... something like @ the beginning of your solo, but not as loud as to disrupt the eruption of the solo. (look @ me rattling on like I really know what the hell I'm talkin''bout lol)... All'n all, I really dig it man.

Brutha Black, that ray of sunshine that beams down on your face is from the big smile on your father's face as he looks down from above, because you've sho' nuff done him proud. Great job, and thanks for sharing this with us my brutha.

I liked your fathers song! I really liked the first vocalist voice. The chorus was very catchy and they sang with alot of power and soul. The music was sweet and a bit riveting in the chorus that brought the attention back on the listener.
I thought you did a nice tribute to your father on your version. While I was listening I was like, "he really need to turn up this guitar.." and you did. As a person that makes music too I felt the drums needed a bit more punch, they were kind of drowned out inbetween the guitar. Your vocals were mixed well too however I suggest belting out a little. It sounded like you were a bit nervous about doing the tune or held back a bit. Like your father's tune the singers were belting out from the bottom of their hearts. It was quite a contrast in vocal dynamics. The guitar work was slamming. I couldnt say more; only that I wanted more of it. nod
I am pretty fond of musicians on the org and I really appreciate MrSoulpower for letting blackguitaritz do his thang and give a really good song from his father on the air! It fit right in with the mix!

I doubt it!! lol

To quote BGZ earlier in the thread..."That's exactly what I wanted to do....Was to stay true to my dad's version and at the same time, put my style into it, including my solos and my "speech" in there."

I think he does sound like his Dad, but Chris has his own singing style... I like it a lot, it fits with his version of the song, and updates it I think. Oh, and it was only Eddie Campbell that recorded 'Standing at the Crossroads' not Eddie and Ernie together. Another earlier post below wink

Aaaah man,..thank you. And thank u for the compliments to my father. Standing to me, is hands down the best thing released by Eddie and Ernie. Although it's billed as a duo, they had already disbanded by the time my father recorded this. My mother & father and myself moved up here to Hollywood in 71 specifically for my dad's solo career. Ernie stayed in Arizona. This song was cut with some of the cats I had mentioned earlier, James Jamerson, Ray Jackson and James Gadson. This song was recorded with a batch of other solo material of my father's. So what u hear on this is my dad on all of the vocals himself. But because Hadley Murrell, a dj turned record promoter/producer who was working with my father at the time, thought this song was on fire that he did a rush release of it with Buddah. Since my dad's only track record at that stage were many 45 singles released under the billing "Eddie and Ernie", Buddah released this 45 as such, thus the Eddie and Ernie title on the a song which for all intent and purposes, is a solo recording of my dad alone. It was to be part of his solo album that didn't come to pass then. Same scenerio with Daptone's release of "Bullet's Don't Have Eyes". That is another song recorded after Eddie and Ernie broke up but because it was included on their compilation album "Lost Friends", Daptone released it as Eddie and Ernie.

[Edited 10/6/09 16:03pm]

I hear elements of his dads vocals too. I also picked up a lil' Bobby DeBarge vibe in his vocals.

I dug the layering on the vocals, and it's jus' him on vocals. I dig it.

Thank you, brah...Dig me now, I have 3 seperate guitar solos in my song and that's NOT counting my guitars at the very end of the song. My first solo in the song is backwards and then my second solo with the wah wah follows up right behind it. The solo with the wah wah, THAT one IS blasting! razz My third solo comes in a little later after that along with my vocals and that one too is high in the mix. The third solo goes right into the ending where it's nothing but my guitars. So out of all of the lead solos, the only one which is lowest in the mix is my backwards solo. Which is the shortest out of them all. Thank you for digging it, S.Mon!

On this week's Midnight Soulstice, we'll move away from the Funk for a bit ... and get serious about Dancefoor Jazz!

Some time between the sweaty ballrooms of the swing era and the small, smoky clubs of Be-Bop and Hard-Bop, hipsters and those who wanted to be hip decided to stop dancing to Jazz. Musicologists are still trying to figure out why this happened, but all we know for sure is that some day, for no apparent reason, Jazz became a listener's music.
But that doesn't mean that Jazz stopped being dance music. In fact, we argue that with time, Jazz became even more suitable for the dance floors. In the 1980s, in hip London, people again started picking up on Jazz as dance music and took it to the clubs. But it was the good folks at Hamburg's Mojo Club who coined the term Dancefloor Jazz with their internationally claimed compilation series Mojo Club presents Dancefloor Jazz (which after more than 15 years, is still going strong).
But what is Dancefloor Jazz? Instead of limiting it to one musical genre, it takes different styles under its colorful umbrella. From Hard Bop to Fusion to Bossa and even a bit of Funk - everything fits, as long as it grooves hard and makes you dance.
As a big fan and follower of the Dancefloor Jazz era, Midnight Soulstice host DJ Pari will take you on a cruise through the decades and serve you a fine selection of the best Jazz based dance music of the past 50 years.
Join us this Friday from 11 pm until 1 am Eastern on 97.3 fm (in Richmond) and www.wrir.org worldwide.

A little taste of what you are going to hear on this Friday's show ...
