MrSoulpower said: blackguitaristz said: I can get into this show right here because I love everything 70's. The rarer the better! Good job on explaining the tag "Northern Soul". A perfect example for me to give with that is my father's soul duo Eddie and Ernie. Till this day, they are constantly refered to by journalists as Northern Soul. Their songs are on many different "Northern Soul" complilations. So yeah, it is indeed true about that tag being misplaced.
I don't even mind the label Northern Soul so much ... but I find it odd when the people associated with it (the Soulies) claim Soul culture for themselves. They would never accept someone like me in their circle because I don't have bad teeth and I don't ride a scooter. "Bell Boy!!" Oh, have you ever actually been to Wigan? My car broke down there once... scary everyone looked at me like I'd landed from Mars and no one seemed to speak any English I knew older boys from my school though, that used to go there for 'All Nighters' back in the day... I like how they followed with your version. The difference is black and white giving way to color. The fills in the first verse give way to restraint in that first chorus. I liked that. The amateur move would've been to go nuts (that progression in the chorus begs for it, right?) but you pulled back and let the chords and chorus have their due. But, when solo time came, you RIPPED IT!!! Awesome job! Bout to make me woodshed to try to catch up witcha. I LIKE this... I LOVE when people really know what they're talking about !

I've heard the original so far.....Eddie Campbell had one of THE MOST SOULFUL and SMOOTHEST voices EVER!!!!!
The track has the Watts 103rd Rhythm Band sound ALL OVER IT!!!! And that's a GOOD thing!!!!! They were also Bill Withers' backing bang for quite some time as well!!!! Now I've gotta hear Blackguitaristz' tribute version!!! [Edited 10/2/09 3:10am]

I really liked the first vocalist voice. The chorus was very catchy and they sang with alot of power and soul. The music was sweet and a bit riveting in the chorus that brought the attention back on the listener. I thought you did a nice tribute to your father on your version. While I was listening I was like, "he really need to turn up this guitar.." and you did. As a person that makes music too I felt the drums needed a bit more punch, they were kind of drowned out inbetween the guitar. Your vocals were mixed well too however I suggest belting out a little. It sounded like you were a bit nervous about doing the tune or held back a bit. Like your father's tune the singers were belting out from the bottom of their hearts. It was quite a contrast in vocal dynamics. The guitar work was slamming. I couldnt say more; only that I wanted more of it. I am pretty fond of musicians on the org and I really appreciate MrSoulpower for letting blackguitaritz do his thang and give a really good song from his father on the air! It fit right in with the mix! Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I am pretty fond of musicians on the org and I really appreciate MrSoulpower for letting blackguitaritz do his thang and give a really good song from his father on the air! It fit right in with the mix! I doubt it!! To quote BGZ earlier in the thread..."That's exactly what I wanted to do....Was to stay true to my dad's version and at the same time, put my style into it, including my solos and my "speech" in there." I think he does sound like his Dad, but Chris has his own singing style... I like it a lot, it fits with his version of the song, and updates it I think. Oh, and it was only Eddie Campbell that recorded 'Standing at the Crossroads' not Eddie and Ernie together. Another earlier post below Aaaah man,..thank you. And thank u for the compliments to my father. Standing to me, is hands down the best thing released by Eddie and Ernie. Although it's billed as a duo, they had already disbanded by the time my father recorded this. My mother & father and myself moved up here to Hollywood in 71 specifically for my dad's solo career. Ernie stayed in Arizona. This song was cut with some of the cats I had mentioned earlier, James Jamerson, Ray Jackson and James Gadson. This song was recorded with a batch of other solo material of my father's. So what u hear on this is my dad on all of the vocals himself. But because Hadley Murrell, a dj turned record promoter/producer who was working with my father at the time, thought this song was on fire that he did a rush release of it with Buddah. Since my dad's only track record at that stage were many 45 singles released under the billing "Eddie and Ernie", Buddah released this 45 as such, thus the Eddie and Ernie title on the a song which for all intent and purposes, is a solo recording of my dad alone. It was to be part of his solo album that didn't come to pass then. Same scenerio with Daptone's release of "Bullet's Don't Have Eyes". That is another song recorded after Eddie and Ernie broke up but because it was included on their compilation album "Lost Friends", Daptone released it as Eddie and Ernie. I am pretty fond of musicians on the org and I really appreciate MrSoulpower for letting blackguitaritz do his thang and give a really good song from his father on the air! It fit right in with the mix! Thanx for digging it... The mixing process for me is always dependent on the type of song and type of VIBE I'm going for on the song. Every song is totally different and each song has a life of it's on. On my up coming solo album, there will be 14 tracks total. My version of "Standing" will be included and the other 13 are written by me. The mix of each song on this will differ from each other because again, they are all seperate entities. The mix of the drums, for example, will vary from song to song. For me, it always depends on what type of aura and vibe I want for the individiual song. For my version of my dad's song, I liked the level and the sound of the drums and how it coincides with the rest of the mix. Again, it's all about the overall vibe that I wanted to get across as a whole. And with this mix, I achieved that. For some people, they can say the guitar solos were TOO loud. For others, my solos were just right and then for others, my solos weren't loud enough. It varies from person to person. That's why it's important for an artist to be able to capture what they want in the sound and be totally cool with it. Which I am. And nah brah, I was FAR from being nervous when it came to singing this song. It felt hella good singing it, VERY natural for me, actually. I nailed the harmonies that my father did on his version, which I'm proud of. No, there was NO holding back on part whatsoever. As mentioned in an earlier post, as much as I stayed true to my father's version, (It's my father who is the only one singing on his version) I also was concious on delivering my vocals in the way that I sing. Which is exactly what I did. I even added different vocal melodies and phrasing during added lyrics that I wrote that's not in my father's version. I'm also very happy with that as well. So nah, I went to town on this. Meaning I was at complete ease. Yes, I've been told numerous times by various people that I sound a lot like my dad on this song, I was still able to convey the way I sing. It's an extreme compliment for me to be mentioned in the same breath as my dad because he had such an excellent voice. [Edited 10/6/09 22:32pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Whats up BGZ. I heard your song and its a great tribute to your father. I absolutely love your guitar playing. Its smokin brah. I must say as much as I record as well, You've got major balls to share your song on the org and face ridicule. I'd love to do the same but i'm not ready to do that yet too sensitive with my material. I'll just stick to the Bay area. Hey let me know when you plan to release a cd. I've got a few buddies that have radio programs every Thursday here in the Bay Area...I'm sure you've copyrighted your stuff. I'd be glad to pass it on to them and surprise them with your guitar playing... Hey man from one muscian to another I support u 100%...continued success.
