I'm glad I did. Blackguitaristz did a great job! The Prince influence is definitely there, but I think he did a good job of marrying the classic sound of his father's song with his influences to create his own thing. I really liked the bass and guitar on his version. Keep playing player. I look forward to hearing more. Side note: They had some nice jams on that broadcast. I went and downloaded a few. Thank you, bellanoche. Cool that you mentioned the bass on this too. I made damn sure to play every lick what James Jamerson played on my dad's version. I wasn't going to mess around with that. Thanx. Yes, the 2 songs that were apart of this radio show....my father's original version from 1971 and then my cover version of my dad's song. No sorry, I'm not from Minneapolis. No where near there. Nor am I from Seattle, (Hendrix) Plainfield N.J (Eddie Hazel), Cincinnati (Ernie Isley) or Rock Island (Jesse).... I was born in Mesa Arizona and moved to Hollywood California with my mom and dad in 1971, shortly before my dad recorded this song. Well let me start off by saying I rarely venture out of the associated artists forum, but when I heard that one of my favorite posters had a song over here I had to check it out. Blackguitaristz has great taste in music. We have that Hendrix, Jesse, Dez, etc thing in common and I always enjoy his posts
So I played them back to back and both versions are great. I was diggin' on that late 60's/early 70's soul vibe of the original before I even learned the actual date of its release Now my man's version is cool, but in a different kinda vibe. As I was listening to it, I could hear that killer guitar in the back ground and I was wishing it was more up front. It reminded me how Jesse did that on his earlier stuff, not so much in the same sound, but how it just hung in the back and you knew it was waiting to bust out. Then he laid down the solo in the middle of the song. Very Cool. Then to extend the guitar again similar to some of Jimi's posthumous stuff on the end of the song was a treat. Great tribute to your Dad.

I have always loved Hendrix's 2 or 3 harmony tracked guitars on cuts like the studio version of his "Star Spangled Banner" and "Drifting", etc. So that's what I was going for with that. I even had a backwards solo right before my main solo in the middle of the song which by concept, is definately influeced by Hendrix and even The Beatles. It's almost Friday ... and time for the next Midnight Soulstice! This week's show is going to be all about Modern Soul - a label that not too many folks understand, because labeling musical genres can sometimes go terribly wrong. Northern Soul is such a case - it has little to do with Soul music from the Northern United States (even though some records indeed came from there), but rather with rare American Soul records made popular in the Northern parts of the United Kingdom more than 30 years ago. Still, the label stuck.
Modern Soul, a style increasingly in demand in the global Soul scene, is equally misleading, because it's all but modern. But unlike Northern Soul, it wasn't recorded in the 1960s, but rather in the 1970s and even the early 1980s. And once again, the label was born in the UK in the early 1970s, when Northern Soul DJs started playing more recent releases, then contemporary - hence, modern, even though vintage by today's standards. Got it? For those of you who are now confused, don't worry about it. Just tune in this Friday from 11 pm until 1 am Eastern on www.wrir.org (worldwide). My co-host Mr. Felty will be taking a break this week, so it's left to myself to play some records that will not only make you feel good, but that will also make you feel horny. You'll get to hear jams like these ... [Edited 10/1/09 11:26am]

I can get into this show right here because I love everything 70's. The rarer the better! Good job on explaining the tag "Northern Soul". A perfect example for me to give with that is my father's soul duo Eddie and Ernie. Till this day, they are constantly refered to by journalists as Northern Soul. Their songs are on many different "Northern Soul" complilations. So yeah, it is indeed true about that tag being misplaced. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Awesome, awesome stuff, man!!!
I like how they followed with your version. The difference is black and white giving way to color. The fills in the first verse give way to restraint in that first chorus. I liked that. The amateur move would've been to go nuts (that progression in the chorus begs for it, right?) but you pulled back and let the chords and chorus have their due. But, when solo time came, you RIPPED IT!!! Awesome job! Bout to make me woodshed to try to catch up witcha.

I don't even mind the label Northern Soul so much ... but I find it odd when the people associated with it (the Soulies) claim Soul culture for themselves. They would never accept someone like me in their circle because I don't have bad teeth and I don't ride a scooter.
