Just wanted to give a little side note info on my father's version....
James Jamerson, famed Motown session bassist, played bass on this track. He knew my dad personally. Ray Jackson, another friend of my dad's, a great pianist and arranger, played piano and arranged this song along with my father. James Gadson, a legendary session drummer who played on damn near everybody's records in the 70's, played drums on this. He too was a good friend of my dad's. Ray Jackson and James Gadson both later went on to tour with Bill Withers. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

PDogz said: "Standing at the Crossroads" - What a sad and moving song. "They" absolutely don't write songs like that anymore. BlackGuitaritz, I think your Dad would be very proud of your tribute, I can feel where you put your heart into it. Moreover, I love how you put your own twist on it, and yet kept the original feel of the song intact. And I can definitely hear where Prince has been no small influence over your sound, lol. Great job man, and thanks for sharing. I would not have wanted to have missed it (having set no less than two separate alerts to have made certain that I didn't, lol).
Thank you. That's a very nice sentiment. Yeah, I know my dad would have dug it. And he certainly would have gotten a kick out of hearing his and my version played back to back. That's exactly what I wanted to do....Was to stay true to my dad's version and at the same time, put my style into it, including my solos and my "speech" in there. Where I'm talking about a real life situation with an old girlfriend of mine and how I was litterally standing at my own crossroads. I related THAT to my dad's lyrics and it fit a past situation of my own like a glove. So the combination of what I felt actually re-doing one of my favorite songs by my dad mixed in with a real life situation of what I had experienced of my own, which truly fit the lyrics of the song,..I just combined both elements together. My guitar symphony at the end,...that represents and symbolizes many things for me. Musically and personally. I can see from your post that u were able to get what I was doing. Again, thank you for that. It's a personal song to me and I think I was able to capture all of what I felt into that. [Edited 9/23/09 1:49am] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Timmy84 said: I gotta talk about BGZ's remake of "Standing at the Crossroads", man, you can feel the fucking tension in that version. I think his guitar really brought out all the drama you would expect, that guitar was shedding tears. There's few songs with guitar that plays like that that becomes emotional: "Maggot Brain", "Purple Rain", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", etc. BGZ's version fits that category to a fucking T!
Damn T,! Thanx man...I like how u described my playing..."shedding tears". That's a very cool way of putting it. As a musician and especially as a guitarist, it's always good to see that others can hear what you're putting in to it. "Maggot Brain", "Purple Rain", those are very emotinally based guitar leads...Besides Journey's song "Faithfully" which is one of my all time favorite songs and one of my all time favorite solos by Neal Schon, I always believed that P took from "Faithfully" and "Maggot Brain", the essence, for his solo in Purple Rain. I grew up loving all 3 of those solos, along with Hendrix, Isley, etc, so I tried to tap into all of those, plus some other things, on this. Because the symbolism of my version and what it evoked in my mind and what the song represented to me personally, I was also paying tribute to guitarists that had influenced me. 1st off, I didn't know that you're descendant from soul royalty untill now And 2nd of all, I can't get over how trippy this remake is,,,,,maybe I'm not the only one, but I love the "dark haunting" mood, I think the guitar accentuate that pretty well. Much props Mr.SoulPower for giving us a chance to listen to this song I truly hope this ain't the only shit we settle with from dude(BGZ). I'm glad that you liked it. Thank you. I like that...Trippy and the "dark haunting mood". I think maybe the backwards guitar part I recorded on the second intro section may contribute to the "trippy" element. I have loved the sound of backwards music and ever since I was 7 years old so I HAD to put it in somewhere in this. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. And his guitar playing does reminds me of 'Maggot Brain' as Timmy84 said...and 'Voyage To Atlantis' too (I love that song). I think it's kind of different to Prince, maybe even more like Hendrix ....but yes, very emotional and way up there! The ending is so beautiful and intense, sounds like there's lots of guitars, it's really hypnotic, and sent me into a complete dream world... [Edited 9/20/09 23:06pm] Yeah, I've had many people tell me that I sound like my dad singing. People hear different things and I like that too. It's all cool, you know. What a great song both the remake and the original.
I think the solos are very impressive and the Curtis Mayfield rhythm parts take everyone back to Electric Ladyland by way of Chicago. And the spoken word tribute to your Dad is very moving.
