Respectfully, Id respond that this is open to interpretation. From my understanding, the film centers around an obese abused teenage black girl in the ghetto, with two out of wedlock children , who is trying to collect welfare. That seems chock full of stereotypes. Yes, I know there is more back story of abuse etc. but it strikes me as a film that paints black communities with a whole host of pathologies. As there are so few films with positive or even average perspectives on black communities, I find these types of representations concerning and tiresome.
