Speaking of Phyllis, I'm being told there are plans to FINALLY reissue her "Goddess Of Love" album on CD next year.

when is there going to be a movie or tv movie of the week on her life?

I know she may only be known musicallly to RB singers but surely the way her life ended tragically it would have to be a human interest story in addition to a musical epic.

It would be explosive! Did you read the book "Strength Of A Woman:The Phyllis Hyman Story"? I'd love to see a movie based on that book.

On that particular album,Clive really screwed up with the singles. The two singles he chose ("Riding The Tiger" and "Why Did You Turn Me On",produced by Narada Michael Walden) didn't do very well.He ignored the Thom Bell songs completely. The album flopped and Phyllis was soon dropped from the label.

Come on, look at the bigger picture. Do you really think Phyllis could have been as big as Whitney? I don't think so. Whitney was young and cute with a voice. Phyllis was "older" and cute. Not to mention, Whitney was more marketable than Phyllis.

She didn't have much of an ass. Her best assets were her boobs. Not to mention her beautiful eyes.

I'm a hetero woman so maybe I can't see it... but what did Whitney have?

wig, and skinny.

Phyllis was absolutely beautiful with luscious features, lips that Hollywood pays big money for, gorgeous eyes, heart shape face, flawless complexion, great/sophisticated style (clothing style). And a voice to match. So full of emotion.

She really could have been the complete package if she had better managers etc.

smile You're right. Physically, Nippy was never much of anything. She's never been considered sexy, by most. biggrin As far as Phyllis, even if she did possess the whole package, Phyllis' mental state would have kept her from really benefiting from it. If you read her biography, Phyllis sabatoged her career a lot. Even when opportunities were presented, Phyllis was not able to take full advantage of them. For a long time I did blame Clive for not making Phyllis the star she deserved to be. But, now that I know more of what was going on, Phyllis' disease was partially to blame.

Yeah,Phyllis really sabotaged her career.I was shocked at some of the stuff I read in the book.It mentions several instances where she made some questionable moves (spoiler alert for those who haven't read the book)....

***The feud with producers James Mtume and Reggie Lucas---A week before the 'You Know How To Love Me' album was released,Phyllis told an interviewer that she didn't like the album disbelief She totally dissed it.It became a huge hit,but when Clive asked the producers to record a follow-up with Phyllis, they refused, opting to give hit songs to Stephanie Mills instead.Phyllis spent several years having (mostly) minor hit singles.

***Ruining an audition for 'The Color Purple'---Yes,Phyllis had an audition with Steven Spielberg for a role in this film!! Somehow, she spoiled it with her odd behavior and didn't get the role.

But Clive is not completely blameless. He made some questionable moves too....

***Releasing "Riding The Tiger" as a single in 1983---a totally inappropriate song for Phyllis. It's a silly dance track that should have been given to a young, teenybopper act.

***Not pairing Phyllis up with Quincy Jones---In the early 80s,Phyllis wanted Quincy to produce an album for her,but Clive wouldn't approve it.I can't think of a producer who was more suited for her than Quincy Jones.

Nice to look at it in two sides than one side but I do think she needed better management and advice. Too bad she suffered from that disorder and didn't receive help, scary shit. sad

nod She had a really distinctive look.A classy, sophisticated look and style. With the right type of management and guidance, she could have moved on to acting or starring in a TV sitcom.
