Essence

2002 hasn't really inspired my passions enough to contemplate a top ten. While some stuff was good, it's the first year in a while that fell flat overall to me, no real favourites or classics emerged.

Norah Jones' father is Ravi Shankar.

I must agree that Alana Davis is far superior -- to date, she has released two phenomenal (albeit un(der)promoted) albums. I have the projects by both artists, though, so it's all good.

- Pink was ok, and so was Missy and Eminem

on the negative side:
2002 was very so-so music wise

No one has mentioned the new one from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Can't remember the name of it.

Is that because you think it's shit?

I thought it rocked!

Oh no!! don't even go there!! RHCP's new album is NO WAY CLOSE TO SHIT! "By the way" is a great album! And I would have mentioned it if I had seen this thread before now..
"by the way" is probably the best album of 2002!!!

Top 8 bought cds/cassettes of 2002 that weren't old school:

1) Remy Shand - The Way I Feel (yay he got some Grammy nods)

2) Raphael Saddiq - Instant Vintage (More yays for the nods, altho he was dropped by Universal two weeks ago. Better for him)

3) Coldplay - Rush of Blood to the Head (just got it, and have been playing it the whole week so far, it's excellent)

4) Audioslave - Audioslave (diggin' the combo of Rage and Soundgarden)

5) Norah Jones - Come With Me (it's growing on me. Took a few months.) Alana Davis' first single was '32 Flavors,' which is a remake of Ani DiFranco's song.

6) India.Arie - Voyage to India (Yay for Grammy nods as well, altho it didn't get nearly the attention as the first one, but it's just as potent)

7) John Mayer - Room For Squares (ditto on the Yays. He was on constant rotation last week)

8) The Roots - Phrenology (just bought it last week, so I haven't listened to it much. They are worth seeing live tho.)

Overall, I agree with those who weren't knocked off their feet by the year musically.

Funkysis, just curious if you heard Donnie and what you thought about it. Looks like we have the same taste in music so I would be interested as to what you thought.

Donnie is this cat out of the ATL. I think he is Marvin Gayes cousin or something like that. Any way, his cd is great if you love that old Stevie/Maze feel. He has mad talent. His vocals have that real "church" sound. Check him out if you get a chance.
