Banda Black Rio

I really love when musical styles of different cultures successfully blend together.
For me, it's like a metaphor for the potential for world harmony. (A thought from my Inner Hippie )

One example i've become reaquainted with recently is the group Banda Black Rio from Rio de Janeiro.
The idea of its original leader, Oberdan Magalhães (sax), was to fuse American Soul/Funk with traditional Brazilian forms.

They released 3 albums...

...Maria Fumaça (1977), Gafieira Universal (1978) & Saci Pererê (1980)

Unfortunately, Oberdan Magalhães died in a car accident in 1984.

A "new" Banda Black Rio was formed in 1999 by Oberdan's son William (keys)...

...Movimento (released as Rebirth in the U.K.)

Not enough modern day street cred?
Mos Def thought enough of them to sample Casa Forte for a cut on his lastest album...

...Casa Bey (from Ecstatic) & Casa Forte (from Maria Fumaça)

More music for the adventurous listener.

You're welcome. I thought this might be something you'd like.
All 3 albums by the original group, along with "Rebirth" are available from Amazon on CD.

A bit of a headsup.

The album Rebirth is not a direct substitute for Movimento.
Rebirth features a few "Remixes" (and you know how I feel about that). confused

Movimento is more difficult to get at a reasonable price but worth it imo.

biggrin Kool stuff, Thanx, tA!!!

The new Banda Black reminds me of some of Multi-instrumentalist Ed Motta's early stuff (Tim Maia's Nephew)--I've nticed on blogs that a lot of people into Banda Black are also fans of Ed (BTW, he was the one that was featured a while back in Waxpoetics with the Out-of-control record collection, Lol!!!!:

Most welcome.

The live performances of the "new" Banda Black Rio in my original post look like they were done at a Tim Maia tribute.

Yeah I remember when I initially saw the pics of Ed's VINYL KINGDOM! disbelief

Obrigado theAudience for reviewing this banda ! I once bought the compilation "Global Brazilians" and it includes 2 tracks which BBR recorded for a special reunion around 1995,
as a special tribute to Oberdan and another bandmember who passed away too soon (iirc Claudio Stevenson, one of their guitarists).
It was exciting to hear those 2 compilation-tracks for the first time back in the mid-90's because BBR had disbanded for so long, and it was just a few years before they eventually started to record Movimento/Rebirth.
My fave track of the 2 is "Africarioca" which has an incredible energized vibe of fast percussion, staccato horn-riffs and EWF-sounding chants.
Too bad that the recorded audio of those 2 tracks sounds lo-fi, because they deserve to be heard in remastered quality.

1. Palco - Gilberto Gil
2. Dance of the Soul (Capoeira) - Tupahn
3. Argumento - Brylho,
4. Samba Do Indiano Doido
5. Lua - Fourth World
6. Rapte-Me Camaleoa - Elaine Guedes
7. Guizarros - Geisan Varne
8. Os Filhos da Musica - Baby Consuelo
9. Sutil - Itamar Assumpção
10. Retiro das Pedras - Yuri Popoff
11. White Cloud
12. Ayre
13. Sinais - Bebel Gilberto
14. Afro-Brazilian Suite: Africarioca - Banda Black Rio
15. Afro-Brazilian Suite: Mulato - Banda Black Rio

Great to see Ed Motta mentioned here as well woot! One of the best gigs i've witnessed.
