Janet Jackson Premieres New Song After MTV VMA Performance

Shortly after performing a moving tribute to her brother Michael Jackson Sunday night (Sept. 13) at the MTV VMAs, Janet Jackson unveiled a new song on her official Web site. Entitled "Make Me," the song is believed to be the first single from Jackson's next album, due in spring 2010.

On the chorus of "Make Me," Jackson invokes her brother Michael's hit "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," from his 1979 album, "Off the Wall." "Don't stop it baby/Don't stop 'til you get it up," she sings over a disco-tinged beat.

Jackson directed her fans to the new song by posting a link on her Twitter page: "I hope u guys enjoyed us tonight," she wrote. "It was very special for me n I have a very special gift for all of u."

Earlier in the night, Jackson took the stage at the MTV VMAs in New York to cap off a dance medley in honor of the King of Pop's iconic music videos.

She performed the siblings' 1995 duet "Scream" in front of a large projection of the song's multi-million dollar video, then quickly bowed before exiting the stage.

The opening number also included renditions of "Thriller," "Bad," and "Smooth Criminal" and followed an appearance by Madonna, who gave a moving speech about Michael Jackson to open the MTV awards show.

Though Jackson has mostly kept quiet in the wake of her brother's June 25 passing, she recently spoke about how she has been coping in the October issue of Harper's Bazaar. "I've been doing okay," Jackson says. "Work helps focus all of that energy on something that is of value to you."

no idea what the details of her second Virgin contract were, but it's possible that she took the ownership of the songs with her when she left (or was booted, whatever).

As a house /dance music head, I'm loving it. I think it's a fan leak similar to the way she released "Weekend".

releasing a hits record in november and then a new lp in the spring seems like smart marketing. remind people why they like her, and hope they'll be interested in the new one. on the other hand, if the record is only as good as 20 y.o., people will recognize the contrast in quality immediately.

I doubt she owns her stuff. That sort of ownership almost lends to an artist having a lot more clout w/ record companies. It's a more even playing field from both sides. "90/10 is employment." Janet seems to have heavily depend on the record companies for promotional efforts. All For You's singles stalled after a while. Janet herself said "Come On Get Up" was begging for remixes, and it was going to be a single. It never materialized, in any degree. Damita Jo did okay, and Discipline had a lot of initial hype, but Island dropped the ball after a scuffle over the next single, so there were only two from that album. If Janet had ownership of her Virgin and Island material, it almost seems that she would have dropped a GH package before now, especially once the Island deal fell through in the middle of her tour, which was also eventually canceled midway through.

I wish she did own her stuff. I think we'd get more things from the JJ camp. But her career since about 2001 is almost reminiscent of Prince's. There's a big build up, a lot of hype, a handful of television appearances, then it just sort of dies off quickly. It seems that if she owned her music, she'd obviously have a bigger stake in things, and would push harder for more promotion, sales, interaction, etc. It just seems that there's been a lot of start-stop-gone going on, and that doesn't hint at her owning her own stuff.

ps - LOVE this track. Reminds me of a combo of some great stuff from all for you, dream street and control.

The song is OK, much better than anything she´s done in previous years. Not a great song for me, but maybe it will grow on me.
