DOWNLOAD! The World's Best Funk DJ's Vol. 2 - Great mix! The mods advised me to start a new thread to post the weekly updates for our radio show Midnight Soulstice, because of the old thread's length - so this is it. Please scroll down for the latest updates, announcements and links to the downloads of our shows.
----- The next Midnight Soulstice, which airs this Friday, August 21st, is the rescheduled Acid Jazz show of the August 7th edition, which had to be canceled due to technical problems. As a native European, my roots as a DJ are in the Acid Jazz movement in London, which was a very powerful force in Europe in the early 1990s. A lot of very popular artists emerged from Acid Jazz, such as Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Omar and more ... but the era of Acid Jazz is also known for many truly terrible and dull musical experiments. On this week's show, we will focus on the great tracks of the Acid Jazz era - those tracks who will stand the test of time. Most of these tracks are well sought after today and impossible to find in their original formats (i.e., we'll be playing the original demo for Jamiroquai's first single When you gonna learn, recorded in 1991). If anything, this will be a show with good London Soul, so tune in from 11 pm until 1 am Eastern at www.wrir.org Some of the tracks you'll likely get to hear ... when i managed a club acid jazz was a big and up and coming thing at the time. i remember seeing brand new heavies with ACR a certain ration supporting, and we were offered jamiroquai at our club for £500 but the owner said he wasn't going to pay so much for an act he had never heard of! this was when he released his first two popular singles
prince of peace from galiano was a fave of mine. back in the day you called the number on the record label and got people like giles peterson answering the phone. the record companies literally gave them a broom cupboard as an office for this new genre united future orchestra was another interesting band worth mentioning i remember one of the times i went to minneapolis and i found the solo cd of one of the dj's we had sitting on the shelf of let it be records. the next time i saw him spin he was playing sign o the times by prince in his set, and it reminded me to tell him the story | |

I lived in Germany during that time, but I came to London quite a lot, so I remember many of the places. It was definitely a very special time, very inspiring, and Acid Jazz introduced me to Deep Funk and Rare Soul. I remember when Jamiroquai just started to play the club circuit, before they signed to Sony and blew up. I'm still friends with many of the people who were around back in the day, for example Chris Bangs (who actually invented the term "Acid Jazz"), Constantine from Galliano and many other musicians and DJs. Some don't want to remember those days, but others still appreciate them ... I definitely belong to the latter bunch, even if I don't usually listen to the records anymore ... | |

I definitely belong to the latter bunch, even if I don't usually listen to the records anymore ... i won't say the name online, but it's directly through the wall (underground) from the club you've done stuff in edinburgh, and the club you've done stuff at, at one time was named the same name as the other club. we had different club nites each day of the week, but every saturday or second saturday we had a streetsoul/acid jazz/hip hop nite. this was early 90s. most of the acid jazz labels were just offshoots of majors like sony, they just gave people a tiny office to run the label in. i don't think we ever had any artists or even dj's that made it big. i saw the brand new heavies at the barrowlands in glasgow, i think it must have been 1992. ACR shared the same manager as the brand new heavies, they were signed to the factory label, and were originally a post punk band but went a bit acid house, although it was just a load of crap really. they were as much acid house as primal scream were (ie. not at all). they were really out of place at the gig i eventually saw JK in glasgow around the height of his fame and he was great live. i also remember getting an early promo of his first album and playing the long 10 minute house style track at the end of a house nite i was djing at and it went down really well. loads of people asked me what it was and no-one believed me it was JK there was another great band called esperantu or something, they had this almost latin tinged acid jazz, and i recall they had a bunch of remixes that you could also play in a house club. most of the people i knew that liked acid jazz were house/garage (nyc style) clubbers with an open mind to all sorts of other music. in fact when i saw prince play glasgow for the first time it was with about 14 of the people i went clubbing with every week, and we went clubbing in glasgow after the gig at the tunnel club where prince was rumoured to have an aftershow, but he didn't do one in the end good times indeed | |

I do remember that club in Edinburgh. It's been a few years that I have done a show there, but I remember the city has a great scene.
On another note, do you ever go to the Soul Spectrum night, promoted by Fryer? It's one of the best Funk nights in Europe ... | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
no, i don't know soul spectrum. i think i have a bunch of compilation cd's under that name. there were a couple of labels in the late 90s/early 2000s releasing great compilations of classic funk/soul/jazz/latin from the 60s and 70s, when i stopped collecting i had all the releases both labels had put out to date. it was different to your more commercial funk/soul compilations, it was 99% artists that most people had never heard off before. i think one label might have been BBE (barely breaking even), unless i'm confused with something else. i think stop and listen was one of the series of releases on one label, there were even a few house tracks on some of them, nuyorkian masters at work type stuff and i think a bit of old skool hip hop
edinburgh is mad right now with the edinburgh festival for the whole month of august, and then september is one of the quietest months as everyone is recovering from overkill in august | |

i had a quick look and found some of that stuff. i couldn't find the JK stuff, but i had the first few singles on 12" and cd single, and i recall there were long extended versions and i think the demo vesions were on there too. i found the cd single of emergency on planet earth and there was a demo of revolution, which was the long track i played at a houseclub before it was released the other band i remembered was espiritu, who had remixes by andy weatherhall/sabres of paradise. perhaps more of an electronica band than acid jazz | |

TD3 said: nice cuts. Damn, Midnight Soulstice this Friday, is going to be.. I'll be there. Thank you. There's much great music coming out of the Acid Jazz era. Most people think that Acid Jazz is a musical genre - it's really not. It's more like a movement, kinda like Grunge. Acid Jazz incorporates many different musical styles, from jazzy Hip Hop to nu Soul to vintage Funk .. and it had its own fashion, too. Here some more tracks ... | |

Oooh, I used to go to Buster Brown's in Edinburgh on Sunday nights, they had a Soul Funk and Jazz nite, that was in the 80's though. Edinburgh had a great club scene, but I'd moved down south by the early 90's... (I told you I'd annoy you MrSoulpower ) | |
