Where do you people get these ideas from?

Radio stations speed up songs a slight bit to fit more bullshit music into an hour. They do it here on Fly92 all the time, and it's ridiculous.

About this "sound younger" part.....WTF? Why would a 17 year old artist need to sound any younger? That's a dumb idea.

A lot of artists will either sing their songs in the original key, or a half step or step down in concert. When you're touring and using your voice so much for nights on end, it saves the vocal cords to have it a bit lower live. Most times audiences don't notice anyway. However, lip sync artists like Britney and others: They have their songs in the same key, same pitch, same bpm, because.....well....they're not singing live anyway.

I've noticed it. Most of Diana Ross' CHIC album was sped up when Russ Terrana remixed it. There's some other Diana songs that sound unnaturally high-pitched. I've also wondered if the lead on Exposé's "What You Don't Know" was sped up. Gioia Bruno sounds rather Chipmunkesque on that one. hmmmmm?

that radio idea seems plausible. but its on albums too. I've read about songs int he 50s where they've intentionally done that to make artists sound "youthful"

Mary Wells' "In and Out of Love" and Labelle's "Pressure Cookin'" were high-pitched.

It happend to Bryan Adams when he first got signed, they did it, and his first single was so fast he had a disco hit. Also Billy Joel's Cold Spring Harbor, not purposely though, it got fucked up by the engineer, and when billy heard it, he got so depressed he attempted suicide

The only time I had heard of vocals being sped up with the intention of making the singer sound younger was when Brian Wilson's dad suggested this be done to "Caroline, No" off of Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

I once recorded The Deele's I Surrender on cassette tape. On the CD player, the track is at a moderate tempo. But on the cassette tape player, the track is a little more uptempo.

This song is better on cassette!

I noticed that on the video edit of Keri Hilson's song Knock You Down sounds a bit sped up because the drums are at a different pace than the album...

Madonna admitted doing her vocals higher on some tracks for Hard Candy to get the old school feeling.

I think I read somewhere that Reggie Lucas did this with "Borderline" by Madonna. It does sound really high pitched and girlie, which is something she's never really been able to duplicate.

Back in the '70's, the rumor was that Robert Plant's vocals were sped up on all the Led Zeppelin songs to make his voice sound higher.

I never found out if this was true or not.

they did this with a lot of her early records. i think several songs on LAV (notably the title track) and Crazy For You got this treatment. i've always heard it about Borderline as well, but I don't know, her voice is kinda deep on that one, so I'm not sure if I buy it for that song. Lucky Star maybe.

Funny thing is that years later they re-worked the album for re-release and they still got it wrong. Billy has had it tough, 2 managers stole from him, and then on the early albums, they wouldnt let his band perform on it.
