The difference between her VMA stunt in 2003 and Janet's Super Bowl stunt is that the VMA's are a cable event where you're going to expect to see some slightly shocking stuff. Ideally. The Super Bowl is a broadcast television event and America wasn't tuning in to that to see Janet Jackson's titty. Not really saying one is worse than the other (though it is), but it's about the context and the difference between paying for cable and free, over the air broadcast. | |

I was working with kids (3rd Graders) at the time of both incidents and they were talking about both of these performances. Cable or not, kids still saw the 3-way makeout session because it was re-aired on basic channels and all over the newspapers and magazines for weeks after it happened. I remember watching that Superbowl and halftime show when if aired and they cut soo fast that you barely saw anything...until they re-played it in slow-motion over and over again for weeks. Honestly, the whole halftime show would have been lewd from beginning to end even if the 3-second nipple slip had not be in there. Diddy was groping up dancers, Nelly grabbed his crotch a few times, and Kid Rock wore the American Flag like a poncho. The only act that didn't use a string of cuss words was Janet and she seemed to be the only one crucified in the end. Not to mention, that right before that half-time show, there was a big fight between the players. Guess it's okay for kid's to see chauvinistic male behavior and bad sportsmanship, but it's not okay to see a nipple flashed for 3 seconds even though you see nipples in museums and textbooks pertaining to paintings in schools throughout the country. That whole half-time show was unacceptable for broadcast TV and definitely not kid-friendly, so to pick on Janet just made me thing people were being sexist in the end because she was the only female act on that half-time roster. I've seen nipple-slips for far longer than that and Lindsay Lohan went panty-less at the Kid's Choice Awards a few years back and didn't get bashed this much. People just wanted to be pissed at another Jackson because Michael was having his trial at around that time so why not hate on Janet too? All just my  Prince Rogers Nelson
