Celebration will be her 40th Number One hit on the Billboard Dance Play chart. Janet is her closest competition with 16

Janet has 18 No. 1's on that chart.

Someone else mentioned Britney - she actually hasn't found much success on that chart.

yeah, that's odd to me. i mean, janet is my preference over them all (by all, i mean all pop stars) but i don't see her as a huge dance club pop star - never have.

You don't retire when you're still having success. That's ridiculous.Madonna just had a Top 10 single as recently as last year ("4 Minutes"),her albums still go to Number One in over a dozen countries, and she just finished a world tour that grossed over $400 million.Did you get that? Over $400 MILLION.Who the hell retires when they're doing that well? nuts

When she gets bored with what she's doing and when it's no longer fun for her,THAT'S when she should retire. But it is her decision to make.

had Kylie remained popular in the US she would have been Madge's closest competition on the dance charts.

Hard Candy was eh.....

But the last ten years have been some of her best

Ray Of Light is probably Madonnas best album literaly alot of people say it's one of them, Some say it is her masterpiece but Ray Of Light is a masterpiece it's Madonnas Sign ''O'' The Times

American Life is my 2nd favorite Madonna it's mixed but damn it's a beautiful album how can you not love Nothing Fails, Intervention, Slow Ride There so moving..... i love them wink

American Life is a good song i think, Hollywood is a great single, Die Another Day while it doesn't mix with the album is a great song(:

And Confessions was another rebirth for her a very good album with a good mix of the dance and deep song

Hard Candy was eh

Her new single is eh....

But i think she still has it in her to make another

Like A Prayer, Erotica, Ray Of Light, American Life(:
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

i think it stopped being "fun" for her ages ago, and it shows in her output. however, i do think she's obsessed with being relevant which is why she'll never give it up.

i think both of these are true, unfortunately. it's kind of a dilemma, really. the "fun" stuff sounds forced, and i think she's too concerned with being relevant and coming off as artistic for it to to be naturally fun. or good, for that matter.

Retire? She is the most successful female touring ever and had one of the highest grossing tours this year. Not to mention that her last cd had many relevant producers working with her. Madonna aint going anywhere.

Relevant producers does not equal relevant music all the time, as evidenced with Madonna. Sorry! TRUTH.

Well, regardless of what either of us think about her recent output, she is still relevant and the number one female touring artists even at 50. You dont retire with those factors on your resume'. Just say you don't like the batch but lets not lose common sense now.

Madonna's new single Celebration has got to be her worst song ever. She needs to give it up. Her last few songs lack any originality and are so banal. In her videos she's trying so hard to look cool, but she looks old and tired. To be still feeling herself up at 51 years old is just embarassing! No-one is interested.

seeing that you took the time to make this thread means you are interested. long as there are people that wanna hear her music she should continue to make music for them.

Lol, her "Sweet & Sticky" tour was named highest grossing tour of all time by a solo artist not too long ago. "Hard Candy" was a hit as well. I'd say many are intersted in Madonna. As for the quality of her music, I'm not too crazy about "Celebration" either but it's for a greatest hits album. Not a big deal. I've rarely been dissapointed in Madonna's albums and I thought "Hard Candy" was pretty decent. I don't understand that logic though that just because she's getting older means she should retire. As long as Madonna still enjoys what she's doing and the public is still interested, she should keep going.

nod

I'm at best a casual Madonna listener and haven't been much impressed with her recent output, but I hate when people bring the age factor into the argument.

"Madonna needs to retire", "Her music is rubbish these days", "She's too old"...

Comments like this remind me of the incident we had on Radio 2 earlier in the year when the TV presenters Jonathon Ross and Russell Brand said something offensive about actor Andrew Sach's daughter. Initially there were few complaints, but once it was reported on in the media people re-tuned into replays of the radio show just so they could be offended by it and write in to make a complaint. Why do people do that??!!

Its the same with music...if you know you're not likely to enjoy Madonna's music, videos, whatever, why do people bother with them...just so they can have a whinge about it afterwards?! Damn, life is too short! There's artist out there I know I'm not gonna enjoy, so I dont listen to them. More power to them I say, but they just aren't for me for whatever reason. I certainly dont make the effort to listen to them just so I can have a moan about them afterwards! biggrin If you dont like Madge so what, no one is forcing you to stay tuned into the same radio station, music tv channel, or play certain CDs. Its quite easy to avoid an artist if you dont like them.

Madonna is championed so much more by her worldwide fan base, the press, the internet blogging machine, concert promoters, concert box office FIGURES, worldwide album sales, every song hits no. 1 at itunes in every country it seems - there is NO WAY to ignore her, still, for even the casual pop music fan. Ditto Britney, Justin, etc but Madonna has been around and on some folks nerves for so many years and she keeps on doing tours that gross hundreds of millions and her new music is still sought after, anticipated, and if not played on US radio stations, certainly dominates clubs in every country in the world...
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Madonna needs to retire when she is good and ready. She is still hot, Celebration is pumping in the clubs, and Madonna has more energy than chicks half her age. Madonna is older, but far from irrelevant. To the poster of this thread: Obviously YOU ARE interesterd hence your post.
