Who says it always have to be morbid either?

Well, I certainly never did! lol
But I do think there's room for both "fun" and "morbid" in "classic" popular music. But Nevermind is more subversive than morbid anyway, IMO

nod

I agree!

But eversince the start of the 90s, pop music has been leaning more toward the "manic depressive" syndrome.

I think rock has been in a whiny phase for quite a while. I prefer Nirvana for having full blown man sized depression lol

but actually I know people in every art (movies, books, music, etc) who seem to think that the more depressing & disturbing, the better the art.

It even applies to your own Billie Holiday. They'd say "man, SHE had issues--I love her!" lol

Now see, thats EXACTLY my issue lol when artists tackle other grounds instead of the "dark area",,,they get dismissed disbelief

I don't understand that, REAL art to me is unlabeled, and maybe I'm abit naive but I thought ANYTHING genuine regardless of its "mood" get across easily,,,,,Billie Holiday is mostly known as a "torch singer" sadly(and I was guilty of assuming that as well) but contrary to the popular image,,,,she had alot of variety in her plate(All you gotta do is listen to Please Don't Talk About Me when I'm gone, Ain't Nobody's Business, Now Or Never and etc).

I can understand and respect it if some people are set in their own ways, tastes wise,,,,but hell, even a manic depressive has a variety of moods that couldn't survive without 'em lol music is def the same.

nod a true artist expresses all their moods, not just the depressing ones, and not just the happy ones for that matter.

why can't there be room for emotionally heavy, honest art AND fun mindless fun/pretty art?

when i'm in the mood to listen to nirvana, i listen to nirvana.

when i want to hear deee-lite, i listen to deee-lite.

just because i like one doesn't mean i can't like the other.

are people really THAT one-dimensional?

If by "office" you mean "the bathroom", then yes I am. I had some pretty intense Mexican food for dinner last night.

How did "Thriller", change the industry? In hindsight, "Thriller's" sound, was no different that anything else at that time. Promotion was key, in "Thriller's" success. Had others received that kind of promotion, I am sure the race for number one, would have been much closer.

Precisely. i would say it wasn't acclaimed by critics upon release, even MJ's fans don't consider it his best. on this here board, OTW and Dangerous consistantly get the nod over it.

My opinion of it, is that it shaped future RnB, how albums are presented, how singles were released from albums, videos and on it goes. it was a blueprint for the industry to follow.

I still prefer OTW.

hmph!

It was EVERYWHERE and when I got older and listened to it, it didn't have as big of an impression with me. I still liked it but I wasn't in love with it. "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle" were staples in my house lol

I'm sure that's not the only Western pop album they've been exposed to.
Just because people have heard it doesn't make it good.
They probably can sing Britney and Madonna songs also.
