Some people on here might can't see this but when this song was initially released, MANY folks thought it was Hendrix that actually played the lead axe on this song as well as on "Who's That Lady". I guess they figured since Hendrix toured with The Isleys before he got over, that maybe he came back to Earth and laid down some leads on these two cuts being that these songs were recorded a few years after Jimi's departure from this place. All I know is Ernie is working that one hand trill on the melody line before he went into his solo. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

People actually played live on Soul Train before? It looks like they played this for real! I thought bands and singers had to use pre-recorded tracks on Soul Train (and American Bandstand, too).

Most of the time, yes. The Isleys only performed live once and this was on this episode. Beforehand and afterwards, they used pre-recorded tracks. Only a handful artists did it live (Average White Band, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner in 1972, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Labelle/Patti LaBelle, etc.).
