Timmy84 said: Trying to say Liberace is an artist is like saying Alan Freed was the "king" of rock and roll.
Art Tatum, that guy Neal posted and Lionel Hampton were more artists than Liberace was. I agree that Liberace was an entertainer, a great one at that tho. Art Tatum, Lionel Hampton, or for that matter Little Richard aren't? Granted the persona, the jewerly and the outlandish costumes may have made it hard for some to take Liberace seriously but underneath all the regalia was a man of serious technique and skill. Liberace was a regular on "The Tonight Show" when Jack Parr and Johnny Carson were the show respective hosts. Way before the customs and the jewels became the focal point of why he was on the show he played Liszt,Tchaiksovsky, Paderewski and Chopin with proficiency. I still say no one but no one plays George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" better than Liberace. I lot of folks (in the classical world) rolled their eyes about Liberace and thought he cheapened the "Art of Classical Music". He argued the problem with classical music community was it too haughty and took it itself way too seriously. ===== ===== [Edited 9/10/09 20:19pm]

I agree 100% I don't think the man would enjoy a legacy that lasted this long on FANCY extravaganzas,,,,I think he was a sincere artist underneath the flamboyant facade.

Indeed. As a musician, I fully appreciate his skills on the piano. He was definitely an artist, and a true showman, whether one likes him or not.
