You hit the nail on the head with this statement. When Whitney came out, she changed how black female pop stars were perceived. Sure, Janet was around, but Janet was a different kind of pop star. I'm not a big Whitney fan either, but I do respect her accomplishments.

Who else could have taken a 100 year old song and changed the entire mood of the country? Not to mention have a number one hit with it.

whitney was actually before janet,(not including her 2 pre-control albums),janet came out and was the complete opposite of whitney. thats what made them both blow up they came along and it wasnt nobody else at the time doing what they did.i remember it was whitney who introduced the debut of 'what have you done for me lately' on friday night videos.

Whitney was out for sure, however, Whitney didn't really blow up until 86. "You Give Good Love" didn't blow her up. "How Will I Know", "Saving All My Love For You" and "The Greatest Love of All" made her a STAR.

Where is the problem. She is getting older and it´s clear that the lost vocal power it´s normal. The voice is like a muscle and it´s normally the strongest when you´re 30-40. Do you really sing Prince can perform Baby I´m a star like in the 80s?? You´re all tripping!

Some people seem to think that reaching 5 octaves and having 'technique' means you are a 'soul singer'.

Lets hope that species is dying out, taking Whitney, Mariah and Celine with them. biggrin

they can still sing your beloved prince under a table. just because you can play instrumentals and carry a tune...doesn't make you a singer. wink

You should see the footage on Mediatakeout that was recorded by an audience member. It sounded pretty bad from where they were sitting (which looked as if it was rather close).

That's an understatement.

The posters are worse than the people that deliver the "news". I like to glance at their site to see if there is something of relevance. Sometimes it is, but not too often.

Its funny how people always look at things and make judgments in retrospect.
If you were around during the 80s when Whitney hit the scene, you'd understand what the big deal was about her. At the time, there wasn't anybody like her. She was the blueprint for the modern day pop diva. She wasn't a soul singer and I don't think anyone with a knowledge of her catalog would call her that. She was a GREAT singer, and anyone denying that just sounds like an idiot. It says more about YOU than it does about her.
Even VainAndy, who truly can't stand "Shitney" admits that she is a great vocalist. I didn't really dig that much of her material overall but I have to give it up to her for being a talented vocalist. She could sing circles around Prince, that's for damn sure. She didn't have to rely on harmony tricks and reverb and delay to come off as a great singer; she just was.
Its easy to dump on someone 20-25 years later when the tone of music has changed but she had a hand in influencing and changing the scope of pop music. Nobody can take that away from her.

clapping

Plus, Whitney was one of the best live singers (in concert, or on TV), until she damaged her voice. neutral

i like her old stuff from the 80s to late 90s, and i think her voice was AMAZING, But after seeing how she treats her fans, I want to know what the big deal is about her as well.

The only thing i give to her, is after all that crack her voice is still somewhat decent.

Normally, I'd never bring the children of a celebrity into a discussion like this but since this was Whitney's doing...

I was at the beauty salon today, getting my hair braided. Which means...if you KNOW what THAT entails...I was there...damn near all day! The hot topic of the beauty shop I was at today...was Whitney bringing Bobbi Christina on stage and giving her a microphone.

The consensus was...while we are glad that Bobbi Christina is starting to look like Whitney...why in the hell did Whitney give her a microphone...when she obviously sounds like a female Bobby Brown? eek

I love Whitney but even I had no comeback...for that. shrug

Would anyone else care to take a stab at it and give me something to say?

Honestly, that was initial argument because that is the way that I saw it too.

However, I was countered with the argument, that Whitney obviously knew what she had riding on this endeavor and had Bobbi Christina hit that stage singing like Whitney in her prime, all of Whitney's and Bobby's transgressions would have disappeared be it would have been "SEEN" that they did, at least do something right together.

What we witnessed, didn't have that effect. It only emphasized, the negativity and called into question Whitney's parental skills and selfishness, for dragging that child up there, when she obviously and clearly was not ready for that.

That...I simply had no comeback for. :shrug.

Well I do...

I think people should focus more on their own parental skills rather than worry about somebody else.

Really, I don't see anything wrong with Bobbi being on stage with her mom. I just think that Whitney can't win for losing unfortunately,,,,,and people being people, can't get enough of reading too much into stuff and passing judgement JUST BECAUSE.

There's SO much emphasis on being the perfect parent it leaves no room for error,,,,,reality is however, I don't think ANY parent hasn't done something questionable at one point or another, they're not excluded from making mistakes just like everybody else. But the "she shouldn't" crowd will tell you otherwise.
