You don't seem to get it, don't you?
Just because you are technically gifted as a singer, doesnt mean you can move peoples hearts and soul. Whitney Houston is not a soul singer, she is a commercial R&B singer: it might impress on a technical level, but its mostly superficial. Listen to some old Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Sly Stone and Mavis Staples to get an idea what singing is abot.

I do realize that Whitney was commercial R&B singer however she had a voice that gave everything goosebumps when they heard it. Feel the emotion in her voice. Mariah Carey is also another commercial r&b singer...however she has written and composed many of her songs...very personal and emotional music as well.

The type of music she does isn't meant to be great art. It's purely aesthetic. And she is (or was) damn near perfect for the product. She's amazingly pretty, seemed like a sweet girl, and had one of the biggest voices we'd ever heard with better control than most of that type of singer. She is undeniable superstar material.
She is the prototype for American Idol (not that I like that type of music). If she was on that show she would have been their greatest contestant, most successful contestant. I am not a fan, but for what she does she is (was) basically the best. My Legacy

just because you can play instrumentals and carry a tune...doesn't make you a singer.
A good singer sings what he or she means, and is able to bring over his or her message to the listener in a way that the listener is touched. Vocal acrobatics and 5 octaves are nothing without soul and honest intention: Shitney, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion are examples of superficial showgirls, all surface, no substance. Prince is a better singer then them, John Lennon is, hell, even Bob Dylan is.

Give me a fucking break please. Singers like Shitney and Mariah Carey are the deadbed for real soulfull music. Its music for the Idols generation. Technically impressive, but empty as a shell. Music to zap from right after you heard it, not something that resonates on a deeper level.

Why did she become such a sensation anyway? Why did some people think she was all that and a bag of chips?
I can show you far better than I can tell you! Exhibit A: Exhibit B: You said: So the non-dancing...
When you can sing like Whitney Houston in her prime, you don't have to dance but since you think she just can't... Exhibit C: She didn't have to do all that ass and titty shaking that today's female singers have to do to sell a record. When it came to singing live, she was all that, a bag of chips and the whole potato chip industry! Exhibit D: ***** zzzzz... I will still take Aretha, on her worst day, with her worst wig and tits sagging to the floor over this crack-drenched snatch eating, knock-kneed skinny legged heffa...She has no soul, and what was once a great tone is now gone forever. Her performance on GMA sealed the deal. BTW, she is the Queen of what? Crack, Snatch or bad wigs? Okay FWYH - Nippy is Shittey! self-proclaim that! What a bunch of nonsense. If anyone is a critical Prince 'fan' here, I am...lol I dont matter what decade a singer comes from, as long as he or she is soulfull, no matter what musical style by the way (from country-rock to funk, from folk to alternative rock). Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dione are 'showsingers', mistaking meandering through several octaves with 'singing'. [Edited 9/2/09 13:12pm]

Aretha Franklin in my opinion, is the best female music artist of all time. Vocally wise, Mariah and Whitney are up there.

I never saw what the big deal about her was. Sure, she can sing and she can sing well. Anybody that thinks she can't sing hasn't got ears. But hell, opera singers can sing also and I don't see anybody rushing out in droves to buy opera records. Why? Because it's dull. Yes, it takes extreme talent to be an opera singer, a classical musician, a country/western singer, a polka player, and anything other dull genre I can think of. And yes, Shitney is a very talented singer also. But at least the other dull genres stayed on the stations in which they are appropriate so they can't bore or influence current and future generations to water down R&B and funk which was what was dominating R&B radio at the time that Shitney came on the scene.
Little miss goodie two shoes should have never been played on R&B radio to begin with. If she wanted to listen to an old buzzard like Clive Davis who probably has gray hairs hanging from his balls looking like tinsel hanging from a Christmas tree ornament, and water her shit down so that every damn group of people would like it, including the adult contemporary soccer mom crowd, then they should have played her on either pop or adult contemporary radio only. Hell, you didn't hear Barbara Streisand or Debbie Boone being played on rock radio along side of Van Halen, Motley Crue, AC/DC, or Judas Priest did you? Then why the hell was it OK to play little miss goodie two shoes along side of people like Prince, The Barkays, Midnight Star, Con Funk Shun, and Zapp at the time? It was totally out of damn place and what's worse, it influenced up and coming artists to stop making hard funk and make weak ass shit just like she did. I guarantee you, these heavy metal heads would have run Barbara Streisand's ass off of rock radio had they played her on their stations. And that little goodie two shoes image got on my nerves also. Hell, get rid of that little cheerleader image holding her school books to her breast and picking petals off a flower asking the question about the football captain..."if he loves me...if he loves me not". Who the hell cares. She should have been asking the question about his dick..."is it this big...is it that big". That would have been a hell of a lot more entertaining. . . .
