Things that make you go "HUH?": The vainandy edition

From the All Music Guide review of Whitney's "I Look To You":

It's only been seven years between Just Whitney and 2009's I Look to You, not even Houston's longest time between albums, but it feels much, much longer, her glory days obscured in hazy memories of lost luster chiefly deriving from a bad marriage with Bobby Brown, chronicled in an embarrassing reality show for Bravo in 2004. I Look to You attempts to wash this all away with something of a return to roots — a celebration of Houston's deep disco beginnings, tempered with a few skyscraping ballads designed to showcase her soaring voice.

She may have been gone for seven years but the damage that she did still lived on. Even she couldn't make things any worse these days. She really should get back with Bobby Brown, get back on the drugs, and do another reality show. I was a big fan of it and watched it every week. lol

They must be referring to Michael Zager's "Life's a Party" or something because nothing in her own albums had any DISCO in it. lol And far from the disco sample in "Million Dollar Bill", I don't know what the fuck they're talking about. lol

I think they mean disco in the general "dance" sense.

it kinda-sorta makes sense, but even when she first started, "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "Love Will Save The Day" aside, she was mostly known for her ballads.

it is kind of weird. I saw something similar in the LA Times or USA Today article and it kind of stuck out.

Her weak uptempo stuff is far from dance also. It's too watered down and you sure can't dance to it. She's just weak all the way around. No rhythm whatsoever.

Harlepolis

AMG couldn't write a decent review if they tried lol

These are the same people who jumped the "Miles Davis is self-indulgent" bandwagon shrug disbelief

Take it with a pinch of salt and learn how to ignore them, people.

I take it that the journalist was smoking crack when he/she wrote that.

the writer might have been thinking of this Paul Jabara showcase album, which does qualify as some "late disco fallout", and Paul is definitely a Disco icon

Whitneys song is not disco though, however, this framework was my first encounter with Whitney, so in my brain she will always be linked to Jabara (beside Bill Laswell/Material of course)

the writer of above lines might have a similar background shrug
