Whitney makes history with Hot 100 entry of "I Look to You" (yeah right, lol)

Whitney Houston Drops In On Hot 100 Chart, Historic Debut
Newsroom | Posted on 08/14/09 | Filed Under: R&B News, Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston is officially back and riding the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in years.

Houston's recently released "I Look to You" debuts at no.74 on this week's Billboard Hot 100, just weeks prior to the release of Houston's album of the same name.

While the "Million Dollar Bill" singer's debut on the chart is notable, the accomplishment also adds to Houston's list of Hot 100 visits.

According to Billboard, "I Look To You" brings Houston's total to 38, just below Janet Jackson(39), Mariah Carey (40), and Diana Ross (40).

Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" is slated for release August 31.

Am I missing something? If she's still below Mariah, Diane and Janet, then what exactly makes this so historic??? Clive must have slipped someone a few dollars to write this little article and hoped that no one would notice. lol

Um... they need to clarify that... This must be the number of visits black female solo acts have had on the Hot 100, because there are several others that blow 'em all out of the water. But they don't mention that. They're coming up with such a narrow notability and don't even bother to note exactly what it is lol

Well they are the "R&B Singersroom" so of course. lol

THEN AGAIN, they forgot the two biggest "R&B artists" such as Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin having WAY more Hot 100 hits than those they highlighted! hah!

i love how they tailor-make these kind of news with some artists releases (such as MC = biggest selling female artist in history lol)

this reminds me when Whitney's Greatest Hits came out, and Mariah's fans went ballistic coz on the lable it said: "with more #1 hits than any other female artists" lol

turned out they combined her Hot 100 #1s with the rest of the charts or something like that lol

Mariah fans did a lot of hard work getting her all those #1's by buying up cases of those 49 cent singles in the mid/late-90's and god damn it, no one's going to take that away from them! mad

The statement is actually correct. Whitney Houston is just below those three. And she is far below Aretha, Dionne and Madonna lol

Now is this Billboard Top 100 or a specific category of Billboard charts (ie Billboard R&B Top 100 charts)? There are lots of artists who's singles debuted high on Billboard charts for a specific genre, but not many of them crossed over onto the mothership that is the Top 100 which covers all genres of music.

Therein lies the true argument, because Dionne and Aretha may have more top 100 singles but only on R&B charts and not on the Top 100, but I don't know because soundscan and chart positions don't make a song good to me and this song really isn't anything spectular....man, I miss Whitney before the crack sad

falloff Hell yeah, Mariah had those kick ass remixes on those singles. Went from being just the one song to the song and 8 remixes so it made you feel like you were getting more for your money even though you were really just getting one song and it's outtakes. lol

Hot 100.

Did Dionne and Aretha have more than that on the actual Hot 100 or just the R&B 100 because that's a huge difference in Billboard land. Most artist's nowadays don't really care all that much about debuting high on their genre chart...they want that spot on the Top 100 because that means they've crossed over and cross over appeal is where the big dollars are. lol

Damn, Aretha wasn't playin' was she. lol

So it actually does make sense that Whitney got this historic title because she's had 38 singles on Billboard Top 100 and not just the R&B charts. Record labels want those cross over artists more than anything. Why have an artist who just sells to one group or race of people when you can have an artist who can sell their sound to white people, black people, Indians, Asians, Hispanics, and anyone else with a radio in this world. The label gets richer and the artist gets more exposure and fame. Crazy how fickle it is really but that's how the music industry has done it for decades. If Barry Gordy hadn't seen the importance of having artists who could cross over, Motown wouldn't have made out the gate. nod

falloff Of course Whitney ain't goin nowhere...her voice kinda did, but she's very much still here and I doubt she will be disappearing anytime soon wink Man, I was obsessed with Whitney in the 80s and 90s and then she got into bad habits and I refused to support her. I still loved her, but I ain't supporting nobody's drug habit and enabling them in their self-destructive behaviors. shrug I'm still unsure whether I'll be getting the album on debut week, but I will be picking it up in support of the rebirth of Whitney. Warwick, Lee, Francis and perhaps Ross are kinda done...perhaps Streisand could have another..we know Ciccone, Jackson, Carey and Houston will have some more HOT 100 entries in their career.
I also think Franklin has a lock on the R&B Charts with 95 entries (in terms of females).

Barbra's the same age bracket as Dionne, Brenda, Connie and Diana so I don't see her having another but yeah we'll see more entries from Madonna, Janet, Mariah and Whitney ("Million Dollar Bill" could be on the Hot 100 in a few weeks, it's already on the R&B chart).

She's pretty safe.As much as I love her I really cannot see Madonna having another 18 Hot 100 entries. She's had only 6 the past 6 years so she would need to be recording with the same success until the age of 69 in order to make it.
