NEW YORK (CNN) -- Nearly a year after surviving a plane crash in South Carolina, disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein was found dead in his New York apartment Friday afternoon, his publicist said. He was 36.

Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein was one of two people who survived a 2008 plane crash in South Carolina.

"The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear," his publicist, Jenni Weinman, said in a statement confirming the performer's death. "Out of respect for his family and loved ones, please respect their privacy at this time."

Goldstein was found unconscious and unresponsive in his lower Manhattan apartment Friday afternoon, New York police said. The cause of death would be determined by medical examiners, but "There is no criminality suspected at this time," a police statement reported.

Goldstein and Travis Barker, the former drummer for rock band Blink-182, were the only survivors of a September 2008 plane crash in South Carolina that left both critically injured. Four others aboard the plane were killed when the Learjet skidded off a runway during takeoff from Columbia. Watch more about his career »

People: "We're going off the end," pilot says in transcript
"Daily I live with the guilt and grief of what happened that night, what I saw, who was lost and why I was spared," he wrote in a December 2008 post on his Web site. "I have no words to express the pain that comes with knowing four people died, while I lived."

In addition to spinning beats at clubs and festivals, Goldstein was known for dating reality-TV star Nicole Richie and actress Mandy Moore.

At the time of his death, he had been working on an MTV show about drug addiction that had been scheduled to debut in October. Goldstein himself had been a crack cocaine addict who said he wanted the show to help others recover.

These articles aren't mentioning that he was the top DJ and very influential to other DJs, but I guess that's all opinion.

The DJ World Remembers AM
August 28

DJ Soul:

"Everybody knows how amazing AM was as a dj. Well he was also an amazing person. Very humble and respectful. He would pop sh*t here and there when it came to djing and sports but it was always out of fun. That's probally what I'll miss about him most."

DJ Khaled:

"It's sad we lost an amazing DJ! Everyone has love for DJ AM! I saw DJ AM play in Mansion in Miami and he amazed me with his skills and the music he picked to make the crowd move. (He) had all the people have a good time! He made other DJs proud! DJ AM we will miss u r.i.p! Every DJ will keep your name alive!!!!!"

DJ Spinna:

"The world has lost another DJ super hero. I'm truly crushed and in total shock."

DJ Mick Boogie:

"One of the greatest who ever did it. And one of the nicest people as well. Let's not get caught up in the sad paparazzi controversy surrounding his death, but instead celebrate a life that touched, influenced and inspired many!"

DJ M.O.S.:

"He was an inspiration to me and every other DJ that has had the oppurtunity to hear him spin. Definitely the best DJ of our generation, and an overall great guy. It's sad that so many of our great talents have been taken from us to soon. But he is in a better place and at peace. My prayers go out to his family and close friends."

DJ Irie:

"Adam lived life to the fullest. Anything he set his mind to he not only accomplished but he conquered. His stamp on the music industry will endure through time. DJ's across the world will make sure his legacy lives on."

DJ Neil Armstrong:

"I got to actually meet AM in person when he became one of the DJs to be able to call themselves a Roc Boy, joining myself, Green Lantern & Just Blaze as a chosen few who get to say they backed up Jay-Z on stage - one of the greatest MC's in hip-hop history.

His life was cut short, but during that time he accomplished so much more then most.
His Career - a melding of the art of DJing and the business of making money - I don't think anyone can argue that it was second to none.

He brought the world of DJing to high society, and showed his fellow DJs that the sky was the limit when it came to what they could achieve financially.

He was the first TRUE Celebrity DJ, and helped show the world that the DJ's were Rockstars too.

For his family and truly close friends who will miss him, understand that he made an impact on so many lives, and he will be remembered and celebrated for all time..."

An Appreciation of Adam Goldstein - DJ AM
By A.D. Amorosi

August 29

Whether buying into Atlantic City nightclub or throwing the first pitch at a Phillies-Mets baseball game or spinning and mixing records for high-profile celebrity friends and fans, all Adam Goldstein - DJ AM - was trying to do after surviving a horrendous 2008 airplane crash was live his life and stay clean.

But Goldstein, a Philadelphia native who grew up in Rittenhouse Square, was found dead Friday evening at age 36 in his Manhattan apartment, where police found a crack pipe and prescription pills. He had been dealing with burn injuries received in the airplane crash and post-traumatic stress disorder he'd developed afterward.

Rock drummer Travis Barker, a friend of Goldstein's who also survived the crash that killed four others, had apparently recovered from the trauma. Barker has reunited with his band, Blink-182, which is selling out venues such as at a recent show at Camden's Susquehanna Center. Barker showed it could be done.

Mostly though, for those who knew his back story, DJ AM had been working hard to stay off the drugs that had marred his life nearly a decade before.

In Goldstein's case, it apparently couldn't be done.

He couldn't outrun the PTSD and his past battles with crack. He couldn't outrun the suicidal tendencies he discussed in magazines such as Glamour and The New York Times.

That's probably how he wound up dead in his apartment only days after throwing baseballs at the start of a Phillies-Mets game in Queens and spinning at the new Atlantic City club, Dusk, where he had become was a strategic partner.

You can't say DJ AM wasn't trying, however. He was selected to host an upcoming MTV network program about substance abuse intervention, "Gone Too Far." He also was staging interventions and was arranging treatment for drug addicts seeking help.

But show business was DJ AM's world - where he was the spinner du jour for private parties thrown by Jennifer Lopez, Leonardo di Caprio and the Ashton Kutcher/Demi Moore axis. But there was something touching about someone of his celebrity hosting a TV reality show that might actually help someone.

It appears that Goldstein just couldn't capture the real joy he'd brought to club habitués, dance floor doyennes and fellow musical artists since leaving Rittenhouse Square and schools such as Friends Central for Los Angeles at age 14. He just couldn't help himself.

Most knew DJ AM from his disc jockey-to-the-stars moniker or from finding him on the newsstand's gossip pages - what with his serial romancing of Nicole Richie (to whom he was engaged) and Mandy Moore. But there was more to DJ AM than being chased down by paparazzi.

If fans of Crazy Town's unsteadying rap-rock-electronic hit, "Butterfly," check the credits, they'll find that it was DJ AM manning the turntables and doing the scratching. Look and listen further and you find that his name in the metal-hip-hop mash-up stakes extend to artists like Papa Roach, Madonna and Will Smith.

The boy could spin. That's how he won his reputation, one he lent to the flashy Pure nightclub in Las Vegas before he bought part of Dusk in 2009.

If he wasn't a commercially and esthetically viable name worthy of admiration and paying customers, would fellow investors have dropped millions looking to cash in? Don't bet on it.

If he wasn't great, do you think Jay Z - arguably the greatest rapper ever - would've let DJ AM spin beside him during October 2008's reopening of the Hollywood Palladium, barely a month after DJ AM's plane crash? H-to-the-Iz-NO.

DJ AM had chops as a scratcher and a spinner, plain and simple. Everything else - the gossip, the drugs - was beneath him. Nevertheless, talent couldn't win out and another worthwhile musician has apparently suuccumbed to crack's long dark shadow.

Really horrible. Maybe he'll find some peace. rose pray

Met him in Las Vegas a few months ago when he DJ'd at LAX, seemed like a nice guy. I was going to a party at his club in Atlantic City in October. I recommended it to my friend for her birthday mostly because of DJ AM's involvement and it looked like an awesome spot and he seemed so excited when he spoke about it.

The reason most people know of him is because he dated Nicole Richie and then survived a plane crash last year. Otherwise, he's known in the DJ/club scene.

Source: DJ AM Had Nine OxyContin Pills in His Body
By Maria Eftimiades

eek

Was it a suicide or an accident?

Authorities investigating the death of DJ AM have found that he had eight undigested OxyContin pills in his stomach and a ninth in his mouth, a law enforcement source tells PEOPLE.

The finding suggests that DJ AM – real name Adam Goldstein – swallowed the powerful painkillers quickly. "He wanted to die," says the source, who says the suicide theory is supported by the pills and other evidence. "He was going unconscious when he took the last one. He didn't even swallow it."

In addition to the OxyContin, the source says, authorities who entered Goldstein's New York apartment Aug. 28 found a Valentine's Day card in the next room from Haley Wood. The pair had recently split. Dated Feb. 14, 2009, the card read, "Thank God you're in my life. I love you." Next to the card were six or seven photos of Wood and Goldstein.

"The card was lying on top of his laptops on the coffee table in the living room," the source says.

Also, a mirror was propped inside the door to the apartment and another inside the door of the bedroom, where Goldstein's body was located in the bed, the source says. When the police, Goldstein's manager and paramedics entered together, they pushed the first mirror to the side. When they entered the bedroom, the mirror propped against the door shattered. "They pushed it open and it broke," the source says.

A crack pipe sat next to the body; when authorities moved the body, crack was found underneath, the source says. Goldstein, the source believes, "smoked a lot of crack, barricaded the doors and killed himself."

Chillingly, Goldstein's BlackBerry was filled with messages from concerned friends. One read, "Some (expletive) just said you're dead. Better text me back."

The official autopsy results, including toxicology tests, have not been released, and sources close to Goldstein say they believe his death to be accidental.

DJ AM Left a $1 Million Estate – And No Will confused
By Ken Lee

September 2

DJ AM's mother Andrea Gross wants to oversee her son's $1 million estate to clear up his financial matters, according to court papers filed in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The celebrity deejay (real name Adam Goldstein) did not have a will at the time of his death, leaving his mother as his sole heir.

Goldstein had an annual gross income of $3.5 million and other property valued at $400,000. However, he carried a debt of $2.9 million, leaving his estate valued at approximately $1 million.

The filing, which states that Goldstein had no spouse or children, reveals the deejay was in talks to sell a home in Los Angeles prior to his death. His mother is also seeking court permission to recover his personal belongings. A court hearing is set for Oct. 7.

Goldstein, who was found dead in his New York City apartment Aug. 28, is expected to be buried in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon.

DJ AM's Death Ruled Accidental Drug Overdose
September 2009

DJ AM died accidentally from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs and cocaine, the medical examiner's office ruled.

The toxicology report showed the 36-year-old had in his system cocaine, OxyContin, Hydrocodone or Vicodin, antianxiety drugs Xanax and Ativan, Klonopin which also controls anger, Benadryl, and Levamisole, a drug apparently used to cut cocaine.

The cause of death was acute intoxication due to the combined effects the drugs, the medical examiner's office said. The dosage of each drug was not released.

The celebrity, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had openly discussed past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs.

He was found Aug. 28 in his apartment in New York City's trendy SoHo neighborhood after a friend called 911. Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweat pants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m.

Six pills were found in his stomach and a pill in his throat when he was found dead in his apartment. The pill in his throat appeared to be OxyContin. A crack pipe and prescription pill bottles were discovered there.

In October, MTV was to debut his reality show, "Gone Too Far," in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abusers. MTV hasn't said whether Goldstein's show will air.

Goldstein was critically hurt in a plane crash last September in Columbia, S.C., that killed four people. He was flying in a Learjet after a performance with Travis Barker, a drummer for the pop-punk band Blink-182 and Goldstein's partner in the duo TRVSDJ-AM.

Barker and Goldstein were burned. Goldstein had to get skin graft surgery but resumed performing about a month later.

Goldstein was known for his mashups -- blends of at least two songs. He performed in clubs, on concert stages and at exclusive Hollywood parties. He was famous in part for his personal life -- he dated actress-singer Mandy Moore and reality TV star Nicole Richie.
